Council shoots down plan for £2m complex

A proposal for a multi-million pound holiday complex in the heart of Wicklow town has been rejected by the local Urban District Council.

The centre, which was to be located at the town’s North Quay, was to cost over £2 million to build.

The plan, which included 10 holiday apartments, self-catering accommodation and a bar and restaurant, was considered one of the most ambitious for years.

However local councillors shot the plan down saying it conflicted with the operation and expansion of Wicklow Port.

Cllr Lance O’Brien said the Council had unanimously rejected the proposal.

‘It was just not feasible and suitable for the area. Wicklow Port is expanding at a rapid rate and we feel this development would conflict with this type of increased expansion,’ said Cllr O’Brien.

Local residents of both Strand and Castle Street had previously objected to the plans at a public meeting.
