TIDY TOWNS WALK

Upwards of 60 people attended last Monday week’s afternoon ‘The Railways of Shankill’ historic walk led by author, local historian and past president of the Rathmichael Historical Society, Rob Goodbody, which began outside Shankill DART station. Participants then travelled to the Corbawn Lane bridge, down onto Shankill beach, up at the Quinn’s Road beach bridge, into Shnaganagh Park to see where the former Harcourt Street line joined the Main Line.

Departing from Shanganagh Park, the group then travelled up Quinns Road to see more remnants of the line before concluding outside the original Shankill station, closed in 1959 where Rob reminded everyone that unlike more places where the railway station was named after the location it was located, Shankill took its name from the station as this was the town land it was located in.

The next afternoon walk organised by the Shankill Tidy Towns will take place on the Monday of the October Bank Holiday.
