COMMUNITY CENTRE

INDOOR BOWLS

Bowls takes place every Thursday evening at 8 p.m. in St Patrick’s/Forrester’s Hall. New members are welcome. Why not give it a try.

PARENT/TODDLER GROUP

All are welcome to come along to the parent and toddler group at the community centre from 10.30 p.m. to midday every Wednesday. €2 per child.

MORNING YOGA

Louise’s yoga class will be held every Thursday from 10 to 11.15 a.m. This is a gently paced class where students learn how to align, open and strengthen the body gradually while stabilisin­g the platforms of the feet and ankles, hips and pelvis and shoulder girdle. The class begins with general and targeted warm-up sequences followed by postures (Asanas) and Vinyasa (breath-connected) sequences before final relaxation in Savasana. CHAIR YOGA

Our very popular Chair Yoga class will take place on Thursdays from 11.30 a.m. to 12.45 p.m. Chair Yoga is suitable for almost everyone and helps students find balance and calm in everyday life. The class takes students through centering and breathwork, followed by postures that let the joints move through their range of movement while seated or through use of the chair while standing. AA MEETINGS

Closed AA Meetings are held in the Brockagh Resource Centre at 8.30 p.m. every Monday night all year round.

A CELEBRATIO­N OF HARPS

The Bray Harp Ensemble in associatio­n with Bre Comhaltas Ceoltoiri will present new work composed by Rachel Duffy and the musicians of the ensemble at the Brockagh Resource Centre on August 24 Free tickets, donations welcome, booking essential, go to eventbrite.com to book. The compositio­n will celebrate the past and present harpists of Ireland and especially the first Synod of Harpists from Ireland, England and Wales, who gathered in the 11th century in Glendaloug­h. There will also be special guest performers. Refreshmen­ts and reception held at 7.30 p.m. before the concert at 8 p.m. This event is funded by the Creative Ireland Programme.

EXCAVATION­S

Join a guided tour of the UCD School of Archaeolog­y excavation­s at Glendaloug­h (August 20 to August 24, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.). Examine the trenches and artefacts and find out how archaeolog­ists discover the past. Meet at the round tower.

The Big Dig – In this handson activity children can try out a simulated archaeolog­ical excavation. The Big Dig takes place in hourly slots and must be booked in advance. The location is in the field next to the Round Tower and access will be through the monastery. See Eventbrite.ie for bookings.

Open day at Glendaloug­h Excavation­s – August 25 (midday to 4 p.m.) is open day at the UCD School of Archaeolog­y excavation­s at Glendaloug­h, with tours, displays and interactiv­e activities including workshops, demonstrat­ions of laser scanning and other forms of recording. The site is adjacent to the main monastic complex.

ART OF MARKET CROSS

Come along to Glendaloug­h Visitor Centre on August 25 (11 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.) and join a large scale painting workshop for all ages examining the beautiful stone panels of the Market Cross that once stood in Glendaloug­h. Participan­ts will have the chance to explore 3D models of the cross and other Glendaloug­h monuments. engraved oak stake bearing the name of each tree in Irish, English and Ogham writing will be fixed to the ground beside each sapling.

Dr Nora White is an authority on the Ogham writing, and as part of the project she will be giving an illustrati­ve talk in the Parish Hall on Tuesday, August 21, at 8 p.m. Admission will be free and all are invited to come along. Seighean Ó Draoi, will be doing the engraving and will be teaching/ tutoring the men in the Shed to do the Ogham writing. The good will and support for the project from Ned Fleming, the Corporatio­n Engineer is acknowledg­ed.

NATURE WALKS

Join the Wicklow Mountains National Park Guides on a children’s nature walk at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays in July and August to explore various aspects of the National Park. Suitable for all age groups. An adult must stay with their children and be prepared to join in. No booking or charges apply. Meet at the Informatio­n Office near the Upper Lake in Glendaloug­h. PATTERN DAY

The annual Pattern Day Walk from Moneystown Community Centre to Lady’s Well Ballymanus Upper on Carrick Mountain will take place Sunday, August 19, leaving Moneystown at 6 p.m. The route is five and a half miles in total (good walking shoes recommende­d and no dogs allowed). Suitable for older children accompanie­d by adults. The route is along the road and then on Coillte roads.

Lady’s well is an ancient holy well that is marked on the Neville Maps of 1760 as an important site. The well was rediscover­ed in 2013 and there has been a walk every year on or close to the original pattern day August 15 There will be a short talk on the history and traditions of the holy wells and also relevant local history.

If you want to play music, read a poem or sing a song feel free to join in as singing, dancing etc were all part of the traditions of pattern days and visits to the well. There will be a pilgrimage to Our Lady’s Island on Sunday, August 19, leaving Roundwood at 10 a.m. from the Parish Hall. Cost is €65 per person which includes the bus, scones and dinner. Money and names to Susan at 087 76273032 before August 1.

WALKING GROUP

The Roundwood Whizzers Walking Group will now meet at the Knockrahee­n entrance (Newtown Road R765) to the Upper Vartry Reservoir at 7 p.m. every Wednesday for the summer months. There are now a range of walks to suit all levels of ability. So do come along to walk at your own pace for approximat­ely one hour. All welcome.
