Trish Walsh and her mum Nancy Mahony with her prize-winning dahlias at Delgany and District Horticultural Society’s dahlia show at St Patricks National School, Greystones, on Saturday.
DELGANY and District Horticultural Society’s annual dahlia show took place last Saturday afternoon at St Patrick’s National School in Greystones.
It was a wonderful afternoon, with exhibitors travelling from as far away as Athboy in County Meath, The Naul, Balbriggan and Malahide, as well as all over county Wicklow.
Some of the categories included sweet pea, shrubs, plants grown in containers, vegetables and fruits.
The show also include baking, and junior classes for green-fingered children.
The next event to be held by DDHS will be the AGM and autumn lecture on Wednesday, October 10.
The lecture will be ‘ The Life and Travels of a Horticulturist’, by Tim Weldon. The event will be on at St Patrick’s Recreation Centre.
The society can trace its route back to the late 1870’s when the Delgany and Greystones Cottage Garden society staged shows in the area.
The La Touche Family who were major land owners in the area were supportive of the society. The family were strong in their encouragement of gardening and horticultural traditions.
They also helped cottagers develop other home craft skills such as butter making, shirt sowing and garden broom making.
The society in its current name was founded in 1944. Three shows are held annually by the society.
