Golfers ensure the first Bobby Messett Memorial is a classic

- By MARY FOGARTY

THE inaugural Bobby Messett Memorial Golf Classic was a great success and a wonderful example of a community pulling together.

There was exceptional support for the tournament, which was held at Charlesland Golf Club.

A prize-giving was held later in Plucks, with winning team Paul Murphy, Mark Quinn, Mark Smyth and Robbie Creavin having claimed victory on the day.

Trophies were sponsored by undertaker Mark Kinsella, who handed the cup over to the winners that evening. They took the prize having scored a very impressive 59.

The prize giving event on the evening included live music by Karl Ivers. The golf classic will now be an annual event. The tournament was founded by Glencormac United FC, in conjunction with the Messett family.

The event had the support and encouragement of the Messett family and Bobby’s partner Natalie. They lost Bobby just a few months ago, when he was shot while training at Bray Boxing Club, in a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Any funds raised will be used in Bobby’s memory. Money was raised through admission fees and tee box sponsors.

Bobby (50) died on Tuesday, June 5, when a gunman entered Bray Boxing club and opened fire. Pete Taylor (57) and Ian Britton (35) were also injured.
