BRAY BOWLS

Pride of place this week goes to our Vets 1 team who clinched the league title last Thursday with a hard fought 3/1 win away to Lerne.

Well done to Michael O’Brien and Dave McMahon who jointly managed affairs throughout the season.

The lads finish their campaign this coming Thursday away to Crumlin where no doubt they will turn on the style.

Monday last saw Division 4 travel to Aer Lingus and in a game that finished in near darkness the locals proved too strong.

I think it was a case of Bray looking up at Aer Lingus rather than down at the bowls !!!!!!!!.

On Wednesday last the ladies finished their season away to Blackrock and they took home 5.5 points from a notoriously difficult venue.

Both Divisions 1 and 2 suffered heavy defeats last Saturday with Division 1 going down 1/6 at home to Blackrock and Division 2 losing 1/6 away to Lerne.

The highlight of the day for Division 2 was the performance of John Reynolds/Bryon Dancer/ Colm Heaslip/Stephen Morris who won their rink by 1 shot thanks to a great save by Super Skip Stephen at the very end when his bowl got in to get 4th shot and claim victory.

This Wednesday sees Division 6 travel to Kilcock to take on the lilywhites of North Kildare. This game has a 5.30pm start.

All eyes turn this week to the Irish Women’s Bowling Association annual championships which are on in Bray this coming Saturday and Sunday 1st and 2nd September.

Over 50 of the leading female bowlers on the island of Ireland will be in action over the weekend.

Bray’s Fran Neilson who is President of the IWBA is particularly proud to welcome all the bowlers to Bray.

The action kicks off at 10.30am on Saturday. All are welcome to attend and there will be refreshments available. Because of the IWBA Championships there are no Division 1 and 2 fixtures this weekend.

WICKLOW ROVERS

Our two senior ladies teams were in action last week, the A team cruelly exited the DWSL junior cup when they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by St Columbans at Whitegates on Wednesday night.

The girls had plenty of chances to win this game but it just didn’t go their way on the night.

Just when the game looked like it was heading to penalties the Dublin side scored the only goal of the match as it took a wicked deflection to give the Rovers keeper no chance.

The girls gave it everything on the night and with a bit of luck they could have won the match.

On Monday the A’s went down 5-3 away to Balbriggan in the league, at the time of going to print we had no information on the game.

The B’s looked like they were heading for all three points in their tussle with Castletown but a last minute goal from the county Louth outfit meant the spoils were shared in a 1-1 draw.

The girls created several great chances to put the game to bed but unfortunately at 1-0 there’s always the danger of been caught with a sucker punch strike and that’s exactly what happened.

Holly Norman nabbed the Rovers goal in what was a good all round team performance.

The second half of the season for our junior teams is all set to resume.

Next weekend the 1st/2nd of September sees the return to action for the under 11’s to under 16’s age groups while 8’s, 9’s and 10’s return a week later. The executive committee would like to wish all our junior teams the very best of luck in the second half of the season.

The WDSL are looking to host 2 x PDP Parent/Coach Workshops before the season resumes on the 9th of September. The Dates/Venues/Times are as follows: Tuesday August 28th – Rathnew FC (7pm-8:30pm); Tuesday, September 4th – Newtown Community Hall (7pm-8-30pm).

The FAI PDP (Player development Plan) format is now a compulsory requirement within the FAI and for teams participating within the WDSL.

These workshops are used to educate the coaches and parents of what is required within the plan regarding structure, pitchdimensions, playing time, rules etc.

These workshops are FREE, and will take no longer than 90 minutes.

We urge all coaches working within the SSG game format from 5v5 to 9v9 Level to attend at least one workshop.

We aim to get all Coaches / Managers from each club to attend, these Free Workshops. There are 2 Venues, the club will be Invited to put forward our Coaches/Managers to attend the closest venue, if their not available on that evening they can/must attend another.

We will ask all to sign in on the evening and ask you the club to put forward who will be attending.

We would also like to extend the invitation to parents of the children as they should have a basic knowledge of the PDP so they understand what the club & coaches are implementing on a weekly basis.

The club would like to welcome Louise Clarke on to the executive committee, Louise will be taking over the role of club secretary.

A big thanks goes out to Louise who kindly volunteered to help us out when she answered our recent request for more people to volunteer to help us out, for this we a very grateful and it’s much appreciated, thanks again Louise.
