Testing times for Newtown and Kilcoole groups
YOUNG people from Newtownmountkennedy and Kilcoole put their physical and mental skills to the test in a unique challenge event held in Newtownmounkennedy Community Centre.
Over 30 young people from both areas took part in the event testing coordination, cooperation, puzzle solving and endurance. Split into teams, the young people raced against the clock and each other to complete a number of challenges that saw the top team win an exciting day trip to Carlingford Adventure Centre.
The event was jointly organised by Newtowmountkennedy and Kilcoole Youth Projects. The projects have been running for a number of years with two full-time youth development workers working in the areas as part of the Crosscare Youth Work team working out of Bray Youth Service.
Youth development workers Martina Keating explained: ‘We work across both areas regularly, but we don’t always get to have young people from both areas together. Unfortunately, we don’t have the funding to do a large scale summer project this year, but we thought we could have one fun event, that brought together young people from both projects into mixed teams, and let them get to know each other through a mix of competition and cooperation.
Fellow youth development worker Linda White said: ‘ The young people have had a long, tiring but enjoyable day. They have all enjoyed themselves, and the winners are looking forward to a great day out in Carlingford. Even though there was one team that had to be ultimate winners, we have managed to make sure everyone that took part will have their own day out’.
