Emotional intelligence and wellbeing

‘IF you are tuned out of your own emotions, you will be poor at reading them in other people’– Daniel Goleman

Life and business is built on relationships. Understanding how to get the best out of people, and to create synergistic working teams and help others reach a collective goal is key for successful business and team performance.

Emotional intelligence (EQ) has been coined as that ‘special something’ that might not be quantifiable. It has consistently been shown as a common trait that distinguishes top executives, and is directly linked to performance.

Google’s research has revealed that employees view great leaders as those who care on a professional and personal level. With its various components, some people are naturally strong in some areas of EQ and can further develop themselves in others. Through the development of self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills, you can strengthen relationships within and between teams and with customers, giving you and your colleagues an edge.

In practical terms, it means being aware that and what emotions drive behaviour and impact people both positively and negatively. Developing your EQ involves learning how to manage those emotions, both your own and others, especially when under pressure.

Self-awareness, a cornerstone of emotional intelligence is the most common attribute of successful people. Developing the components of EQ strengthens the various pillars of wellbeing. People who are connected within and with others naturally boost their mental, emotional, social and creative wellbeing and are more engaged and committed to looking after their total wellbeing.

Happy employees who are engaged, connected and value themselves and others can be at their best. Developing EQ is an investment that pays, helping individuals and teams to have strong cohesive bonds of trust and respect committed to the ‘we’ and high-performance.

The components of emotional intelligence are: - Emotional self-awareness and self-control - Adaptability

- Developing and fostering a positive outlook - Empathy and influence

- Conflict management

- Teamwork

- Inspirational leadership

When we focus on developing these traits in ourselves and fostering them in others, we naturally develop and enjoy more meaningful relationships.

Good relationships are shown to be the most important factor in our health and wellbeing over time and are critical for strong results. People do business with people and people connect with people.

Relationships are forged and strengthened through emotional intelligence and engagement and performance are enhanced. When relationships are strong stresses and problems get solved easily.

Fear, anger, happiness, and sadness are the four basic emotions of human beings. Everyone has felt them no matter what stage, age, background or culture.

To develop your own EQ, it is important to know how and when they affect you. Our emotions play a major role in our psychological development. They serve to advise and guide us in our lives and how we relate with others.

We all feel fear, anger, happiness and sadness. We all experience the roller-coaster of emotions sometimes many times throughout a given day. Our emotions offer us very useful information showing us how we are here and now.

It is very useful to reflect on your emotions and how you are and what your emotions are telling you to look at or change. Sometimes it is your mind-set. Others it is an action you need to take.

Wishing you a wonderful week of self-discovery as you develop an understanding of your fears and what makes you happy, sad and even angry. This will help you form better relationships and support others in your life and bring strong outcomes for yourself and the teams you are part of and lead.
