- By BRENDAN KEANE

A CONVICTED child killer who escaped while on day release from a prison in Northern Ireland was located in Bray on Monday and subsequently conveyed back to the North, where he was arrested by the PSNI in Newry.

John Clifford was convicted in 1989 of raping and killing his eight-year-old niece. He was on the run for over a week when he was spotted near Bray Dart station.

The gardaí subsequently assisted the PSNI in bringing him back into their custody in the North.

A WOMAN was charged last week with the murder of her three-year-old daughter last February in Shankill.

Emer Cannon (42) appeared at a special sitting of Bray District Court last Wednesday. She was charged with the murder of her daughter Zoe Whitford following an incident at their Aubrey Grove home, alleged to have occurred on February 10. Cannon was remanded in custody and the matter was adjourned to Bray District Court this week. She made no application for bail.

Zoe died in hospital on Tuesday, February 13, when her life support machine was turned off.

The Book of Evidence will be produced within the coming month, it is expected, with the matter to be sent forward to the Central Criminal Court.

Cannon had been charged previously with assault causing harm.

An inquest heard last May that Zoe died after she suffered a reduced supply of oxygen to her brain.

At Zoe’s funeral at St Anne’s Church in Shankill, her father William said that the child has helped others live through organ donation.
