BRAY BOWLS

Another season just finished. Our Division 6 team went to Westmanstown last Wednesday and brought home one point.

They complete their programme tonight (Wednesday) away to Kenilworth.

They are guaranteed to finish in second place. Well done to non playing captain Owen Byrne and his merry band of bowlers.

Divisions 1 and 2 finished the season last Saturday with defeats to Dun Laoghaire. Division 1 went down 0/7 at home. They finished in seventh position in the league.

Division 2 went down 1/6 away in Dun Laoghaire where Nick Hewlett, Eddie Condren and Roddy O’Leary were to the fore.

The team finished in sixth place in the league. All in all it was a mixed bag of a season with Division 4 ending in sixth place and the ladies ending up in mid table as well.

Pride of place goes to Vets 1 and Vets 3 on winning their leagues and to Division 6 on getting second spot.

An honorable mention to Vets 3 on finishing in third position. All attention now switches to our club championships and a full report will follow next week.

The Winter League kicks off on October 13 and Bray have entered two teams.

Finally, congrats to Sean O’Mealoid on winning the club lotto.

WICKLOW ROVERS

Congratulations to our senior ladies A team who claimed the Inter 2 title last Monday night when a combination of their 5-1 win away to CMH FC and a draw between their two title rivals St Columbans and Balbriggan meant they lifted the league trophy.

The girls fulfilled their side of the equation when they had a resounding victory and then anxiously waited for the news to filter through with the result they were waiting to be announced as champions.

Niamh O’Brien smashed home a fantastic hat-trick with Rachel Bolger adding a brace in what was a great all round team performance.

This was an excellent achievement for the girls as they gain promotion for the second season running.

Our senior ladies B team went down 6-1 away to Mourne Celtic of Drimnagh last week.

The girls battled hard throughout but the home side were more clinical in front of goal.

The girls gave a hundred percent and to their credit they always play with a smile on their faces. Win, lose or draw they enjoy their football.

This is the first season for a lot of their players and if they can build on this there is better times ahead. Holly Norman notched their goal on the night.

Our DDSL Youths defeated Collinstown 2-1 at Whitegates on Sunday, in a game that the lads dictated for long periods they surprisingly found themselves having to come from a goal behind to claim all three points. Stephen Finlay levelled matters before Daniel Fitzsimons popped up with a deserved winner.

In midweek junior action Tues- day saw the under-12Bs go down 3-0 at home to Sporting Greystones.

The lads didn’t get going in this game but battled right to the final whistle.

The 13Bs narrowly lost out 1-0 away to league leaders Aughrim. In a tightly contested game the home side probably just about deserved the three points.

The 14Bs proved football is a funny old game when they recorded a 7-1 away win over Roundwood, they had lost to the same opposition 5-1 at home three days prior to this game.

Tom Farrelly and James Fagan both scored two each with Zach Harris, Robert Cherry and Ruadhrai Kelly adding one a piece.

On Thursday night the under-11s played out 1-1 draw with Ashford Rovers under-11s in the Under-12 Premier League.

In a closely fought encounter Steven Kavanagh scored the Rovers goal to earn them a share of the spoils.

Saturday’s action saw the under-11 green team earn a great 3-1 away win over St Anthonys in the Under-12 Premier League.

A brace from the excellent Steven Kavanagh and a single from Conor Williams helped them come back from a goal down to claim all three points.

The 12Bs went down 2-1 away to St Patricks in a close encounter, Bren Doyle netted for Rovers in a game in which the lads could have got something from.

Our 13As recorded an excellent 2-0 victory over fellow table toppers and previously unbeaten Marks Celtic at Whitegates.

Oscar Malcolmson and Keelan Darcy netted the all important goals for Rovers as they move three points clear of their opponents with a game more played.

This was an excellent result for the lads in what was a fantastic all round team display.

The 15As consolidated their position at the head of the DDSL Saturday A league when they defeated Wayside Celtic 4-1 at Whitegates.

A double from Ross Quinn led the way with Ryan Kavanagh and Adam O’Reilly hitting one each to earn them three valuable points.

On Sunday, our 13Bs edged out local neighbours Rathnew in a 3-2 thriller.

This was an excellent game with both sides playing their part. Ruairi Jenkinson fired in two well taken goals with Adam Byrne adding the third.

Well done to both teams on serving up an entertaining game of football.

The 15Bs played out a scoreless draw with Arklow Celtic at Whitegates, as 0-0 draws go this proved to be a cracking game with both sides playing their part. Rovers just about shaded the possession stakes but just couldn’t get that elusive goal.

Once again we request all our managers and teams not to be moving the main goalposts on the Rocky Road, it has come to our attention that this is happening and the goalposts are then been left around the ground.

The posts are staked down in position for match day so for safety reasons please do not move the goalposts, thank you.

Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Reverend Canon Thom- as Robert Jennings of Newcastle who sadly passed away recently. His grandson Jack plays in goals with our under-15Bs, our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time, may he rest in peace.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

All our teams had matches last weekend apart from the Under-10s whose game away to Carnew fell victim to the heavy overnight rain.

The Under-8s played away to Wicklow Rovers Blue and our teams proved too strong on the day.

Among those that starred on the day were Colin Healy, Theo Messitt and Jack Gavin.

Our Under-9s hosted St. Patricks and despite a rather one sided game on one of the pitches in the first game the other seven games were much much closer.

On the day, Albie Chance, Jack Barlow and Alex Ryan starred.

It was another narrow victory for the Under-11s as they edged out Enniskerry White away by 4-3. Jake Robertson scored another treble and Brooklyn Doyle also scored in a good team display.

It was another even game for the Under-12s as they hosted Avonmore B and it was a late goal in the second half that gave the away side all three points in a 1-0 win.

For Newtown it was a day where they had good possession but too often the final pass in the attacking third was missing.

Edward Valentine, Iggy Szpilka and Jamie Fitzgerald were among those who tried hard for the home side.

Arklow Town arrived in Newtown looking for a win to secure the Division 1 league title and after a titanic game full of goals and drama they got the required three points.

We congratulate Arklow on their league win and commend our team for making sure that if Arklow were going to win it they had to earn it.

Our team can take a lot of positives from the game but they will also know that they need to improve on a few things.

On the day we had six different goalscorers namely, Bogdan Rusu, Ryan Clarke, Luke Breen, Charlie Sullivan, Bobby Dowling and Shane Dunleavy.

All fixtures, competitive and non trophy, will finish weekend of November 17 and 18 followed by the WDSL awards, presentation day in the Parkview Hotel on Sunday, November 25, (details times etc to follow in October).

There are also a couple of slots on all our teams at the moment so if there are any girls or boys who would like to join the club please contact our secretary, Hughie, at 087 6987653 and he will provide you with all the information you will require.

All of our teams are back in training. If anyone is interested in joining any of our teams please contact our secretary, Hughie, at 087 6987653 and he will provide you with the necessary information including training times.

Well done to our coaches and parents who attended the FAI PDP Workshop last Tuesday in the Community Centre. Many thanks to the RDO Ritchie Fitzgibbon and his two helpers Jim and Sean for their assistance on the night.

All players and parents from the club will receive a pocket sized copy of all the different formats of the game within the PDP that their child/children are likely playing and if anyone has any questions regards the same please forward them to the secretary.

Our ever-popular Development Squad started back last Saturday and will continue every weekend from 10am until 11am and new players are welcome. The cost is €2 per head.

The WDSL would like to run an Academy/Development Squad league from September 15 to November 18 in preparation for the Under-8s season in February 2019.

This venture would be open to players born in 2011/2012 only and would require among other things recruiting a couple more volunteer coaches.

We have had some interest in folk wanting their children to play and while we welcome all players’ please only sign your child up for this team only if you intend to commit to practise and matches for further information please contact the secretary.

This coming week we have four of our footballers celebrating a birthday and they are Amelia Lacey and Samuel Kearns from our Development Squad and Michael Synnott and Daniel Eager from the Under-10s.

Happy birthday guys from everyone in Newtown Juniors F.C.

Our Last Man Standing competition will start back on September 29/October 1 and it’s our first one of the season.

To enter it costs €10 per head and the more players we get the more money we can hand out.

If interested in taking part please contact any committee member or coach in the club for further details. L.M.S.

Rules are posted on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

On a sadder note we would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Nancy Cullen (Killadreenan) and Reverend Canon Robert Jennings (Newcastle) who both sadly passed away last weekend. May they rest in peace.

For further information on all matters Newtown Juniors F.C. please contact the secretary at 087 6987653 or by email to hughienolan@gmail.com and you can also follow the club on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
