KILCOOLE GLENEALY 1-15 2-8

KILCOOLE advanced to a semi-final with Arklow Rocks after a deserved victory over a brave Glenealy side at Arklow last Sunday last in their Intermediate hurling quarter-final. A lightning fast start by the Goosebankers gave them the advantage that they were never to lose against last year’s champions.

Kilcoole showed their intent from the off with wingback Paddy O’Brien striking a superb score from underneath the stand.

Strong corner-forward Conor O’Toole rattled the Glenealy net on eight minutes after Gary Coady had broken the ball into his path.

Further points were added through Ronan Keddy and a trio of Luke Evans scores to leave Kilcoole eight clear after 15 minutes.

Jack Kavanagh eventually got Glenealy on the board with a free after 17 minutes.

The closing stages of the half saw further points from Lee Dutton, Evans and Eoin Keddy for Kilcoole with Kevin O’Halloran and Kavanagh replying for Glenealy to leave eight in it at the break.

Glenealy showed their trademark grit and determination, striking the opening four scores of the second half to get right back in the contest. Kavanagh was responsible for all four scores.

Evans got a much needed Kilcoole score from a 70 before Glenealy half-time sub Alan Conyard drilled a rocket of a drive past keeper Chris Carroll to reduce the deficit to two points.

Ronan Keddy and Eoin O’Neill traded points before Kilcoole took over again and struck for home.

Three long-range Evans points and two from Ronan Keddy had Kilcoole seven to the good. However, back came Glenealy and Conyard added his second from a penalty in injury time.

An enjoyable contest with Kilcoole’s start ultimately leaving Glenealy too much to do. For Glenealy, Declan Conyard, Kavanagh and Alan Conyard had fine games. For the victors the holy trinity of Vinny Quigley, Luke Evans and Ronan Keddy guided them home with Evans claiming the man of the match honours.
