Amazons get back on track with sweet win

ARKLOW AMAZONS 31 WEXFORD WANDERERS 7

ON a bright and breezy Sunday morning, Arklow Amazons took to the field for their second league game of the season under new coaches Trevor Prestage and Billy Byrne.

The ladies had a point to prove having narrowly lost at home last weekend. Arklow kicked off the game and straight away put Wexford under pressure.

Wexford used their size in the pack and their skillful backs to put the first score on the board. Arklow responded and fought hard to cross the line with a fantastic pick and drive from Hannah Mai Jones to score her first try for the Amazons in only her second senior game.

Wexford where not here for fun and wanted this win as much as Arklow. The next 20 minutes of rugby was played with both sides utilising their skills and giving the large crowd of spectators an enjoyable watch.

It was Wexford who crossed the line again to leave the score at 5-12 at half-time. Arklow started the second half strongly with Rebecca New crossing the line squaring the score board at 12 all.

The game was then delayed for 30 minutes to deal with an injury. Arklow maintained their composure and got straight back into the game. The pressure Arklow loaded on Wexford paid off with the awarding on a penalty try. 17- 12. Wexford were not finished yet and were putting Arklow under pressure. A sustained period of Arklow defending their line in a great defensive display eventually resulted in another Wexford try. 17-17.

From the restart Arklow looked comfortable and composed and this showed when Hannah Mai crossed the line for her second try of the day. 24-17.

The final try of the day was scored by Emer Dillion who had plenty of gas left in the tank to beat defenders on the outside to score under the posts.
