Truck run in memory of baby Luke

- By SARA GAHAN

A VERY special truck run in memory of baby Luke Traynor O’Loughlin will set off from the County Grounds in Aughrim this weekend.

The East Coast Night Truck Run is being held in memory of the Aughrim tot, who sadly passed away last year, and to raise funds for LauraLynn.

An estimated 60 truckers are expected to take part and will set off from the County Grounds at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 6. They will do a loop of Aughrim village before heading for Arklow’s Main Street, continuing on to Gorey and Carnew and finishing up back in Aughrim.

Main organiser Denis Newsome said he wanted to do the night run for LauraLynn as they contributed a lot to Luke in his final few days.

‘Luke’s parents are neighbours of mine and it broke my heart to see something like that,’ said Denis. ‘I asked them would it be OK to do the run in his memory while raising money.’

The truck run will take place just days before the first anniversary of Luke’s death. As the procession of trucks passes through the towns and villages, they will be joined by volunteers walking with buckets to accept donations.

Registration is still open and entries will also be taken on the day. The cost of entry is €25 per truck. Participants are asked to gather at the County Grounds from 3 p.m., where refreshments will be served before the run starts. There will be music and a raffle in O’Toole’s Pub in Aughrim afterwards.

For more information, call Denis on 087 2387216 or email eastcoastnighttruckrun@gmail.com. If any truckers need to stay over, Denis said that they can do so at the County Grounds, where a free breakfast will be provided the next morning.
