‘The Mental’ comes to the Courthouse

-

JOHN MACKENNA makes a welcome return to the Courthouse Arts Centre in Tinahely on Friday, October 5, with his new one man show, The Mental.

The Mental is the story of John Salter who spent forty years in psychiatric care for doing a good deed. It takes place on the last day of April 1990, the day when John reaches the end of his fortieth year in the hospital and a time when patients were being reintegrated into the community.

But John has no desire to leave the hospital - he has his jobs to do and who, he asks, will wake the crows in the morning and put them to bed at night if he’s not there.

The Mental is the third play in Mend & Makedo Theatre Company’s Barrow trilogy that began with Corner Boys and continued with Lucinda Sly.

It is writted by John MacKenna, directed by Angela Keogh and lighting is by Tom Kennedy.

MacKenna is a man of many talents, playwright, poet, novelist and radio producer. His work spans the music of Leonard Cohen to a biography of Ernest Shakleton – a fascinating tranche of work.

Doors open at 8p.m. and tickets are €16/€14.
