Talk on island Tern population
THE Next talk organised by the Wicklow Branch of BirdWatch Ireland will focus on the work at Rockabill to protect one of Europe’s most important Tern colonies.
Brian Burke from BirdWatch Ireland will reveal how the wardens on Rockabill monitor the Roseate Tern colony that breed on the island and help them survive starvation, dehydration, and being under constant attack.
The talk takes place in the Glenview Hotel from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9.
The most recent branch outing was to Kilccole where the following species were spotted: Goldfinch, Barn Swallow, Rook, Robin, House Martin, Hooded Crow, Mute Swan, Cormorant, Gannet, Sandwich Tern, G. blackbacked Gull, Razorbill, Blue Tit, Oystercatcher, Curlew, Chiff Chaff, Red-throated Diver, Reed Bunting, Shag, Stonechat, Grey Heron, Little Egret, Teal, Mallard, Wigeon, Shelduck, Woodpigeon, Lapwing, Snipe, Skylark, Common Sandpiper, Guillemot, Herring Gull, Wheatear, Golden Plover, Meadow Pipit, Redshank, Little Grebe, Ringed Plover, Jackdaw, Linnet, Coot, Merlin, Little Terns, Carrion Crow, Black-tailed Godwits, Sparrowhawk, Pied Wagtail, Starling, Kestrel, Feral Pigeon and Blackbird.
An Otter and a Grey Seal were also sighted during the outing.
Very Large entry of 650 weanlings saw an excellent trade for bulls with strong shipper and feedlot demand. Forward and shipping heifers met a strong trade with lighter heifers meeting a slower demand. Champion bull owned by Mr Frank Kenna 1 Belgian Blue 540kg sold for €1,570.
