Crowley hits form in Russia

Sean wins Kalilingrad Cup

-

SEAN CROWLEY, Arklow’s young middleweight, recorded two great wins when he travelled to Russia last week with a Leinster Development squad.

Arklow boxing club coach and Sean’s father, Alister, travelled as coach of the team.

Sean’s first opponent, Alexei Sokolov, was like Sean in the sense of being very tall, and Sean used his fast jab and solid right cross to keep the Russian boxer on the back foot. Sean’s uppercut was also a major punch which saw him emerge as unanimous winner.

In the final, Sean was in with Vladimir Kuznetsov who is East Russian champion and a noted puncher. In the first round the Russian moved forward aggressively but was caught by Sean’s long-range punches and right uppercut to edge the first round.

In the second, Sean took control and after scoring a solid right to the chin the Russian boxer staggered and the referee gave him a count.

In the third and final round, Sean was scoring at will, and dropped Vladimir with a solid right and as Sean closed in for the kill the bell rang to save the Russian from being knocked out.

A great result for Sean who will now take part in the Wexford Boxcup and will top the bill in the Arklow Bay Hotel on November 2.

The team finished with three gold medals and two silver, so well done to coach Allister Crowley who also did the club proud.
