WICKLOW ROVERS

Our senior men took on Kill Celtic FC at Whitegates on Saturday. After a tight opening 20 minutes the visitors drew first blood when they scored from a free kick on the edge of the area.

It could have been worse a few minutes later only Rossa Marron in the Wicklow goal got down well at full stretch to turn the ball away.

Rovers were creating chances but were wasteful in front of goal. However, they did get a deserved equaliser when Davy Rowan got on the end of a Rovers corner to powerfully head past the keeper. A mess up at the back led to Kill retaking the lead just before the half time break.

The lads came out on the front foot in the second period pushing their opponents back. Rovers went close on several occasions but just couldn’t apply the killer touch when it mattered.

Celtic then seemingly put the game to bed when they went 3-1 up. But Rovers had other ideas as they continued to press forward, their pressure was rewarded when they were awarded a penalty, Adam Cox stepped up and coolly slotted the spot kick into the bottom right hand corner to put the game back in the balance.

Unfortunately for the lads they were caught napping when the away side made a swift counter attack which resulted in their fourth goal to seal a 4-2 victory.

Midweek junior action saw the under 11’s play out an exciting 1-1 draw with Roundwood at Whitegates. Steven Kavanagh gave Rovers the lead, but the away side battled back to equalise to ensure the points were shared.

On Saturday, our 12As title hopes suffered a setback when they lost 3-2 to fellow challengers Peamount Utd, Lorcan Sinnott and Danny Kavanagh gave Rovers a 2-0 lead but Peamount battled back with three goals, the winner coming four minutes from time.

The 15As were held to a scoreless draw away to Palmerstown FC. In what was a tight encounter with both defences on top through- out the lads will be hoping they don’t rue this result.

The under-16s took on local neighbours Wicklow Town in what proved to be an exciting game of football. The Town ran out 4-2 winners. Chris Mabuza put Rovers in front, but the Town hit three goals to go 3-1 up. Tom O’Shea made it 3-2 but the Town sealed the game with a fourth.

Sunday’s action saw the 13Bs record an excellent 4-0 home win over Arklow Town at Whitegates. The lads were fantastic on the day and were clinical in front of goal. Cian Leonard, Adam Byrne, Ruairi Jenkinson and Oliver Lawless all hit the back of the net in a fantastic team performance.

The under-15 girls travelled to Malahide and came home with all three points in a brilliant 6-2 victory. Goal machine Molly Sweeney helped herself to a personal haul of four goals, Justine Cronin added a single with the sixth coming in the shape of an own goal in another excellent team performance from the girls.

After round 3 of our Last Man Standing competition we are now left with 81 players left standing. Tottenham struggled against Cardiff but eventually got the better of the men from Wales to narrowly win 1-0 to put 48 players into round 4.

Chelsea had a comfortable 3-0 away win over Southampton which saw a further 16 players go through. Manchester United’s 10 supporters must have been worried with 20 minutes remaining as they trailed 2-0 to Newcastle but then they came roaring back to win 3-2 to help them into the next round.

Another six players moved into round 3 when their choice Arsenal continued their good form to hammer Fulham 5-1 at Craven Cottage. A single brave soul that went with Everton for their away trip to Leicester were rewarded when Everton won 2-1 to see that single player progress. Out through the exit door went 11 players who saw their selection Burnley held to a 1-1 draw at home to Huddersfield.

Another five players went out when surprisingly inform Watford were trounced 4-0 on their own turf by Bournemouth. Leicester’s 2-1 home defeat to Everton saw one player bite the dust while another single player came a cropper in the Friday night game when their selection West Ham lost narrowly 1-0 away to Brighton.

The last player to exit came on the back of Southampton’s 3-0 defeat at home to Chelsea. There will be no Last Man Standing next week due to the international break.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

Only the under-11s were without a game last weekend as the rest of our teams played with the sun shining even if it was a little colder than recent weeks.

Our Academy under the guidance of Geraldine and Nathan travelled to take on Arklow United and after a tough series of games the team continued to improve.

On the day, best were John Paul Dunleavy, Hubert Wyborski, Finn Heffernan and Leon White.

Our 8s hosted Coolboy Rangers and again showed some fine form in an evenly contested contest. On the day, Theo Messitt, Colin Healy and Tyler Doyle stood out.

In the 9s we hosted Ashford Rovers and at the end of their series of games there was very little between both sides. On the day on the scoresheet for Newtown were JV Kelly, Alex Ryan, Lucas Dowdall, Jack Barlow, John Turley and Felix Geoghegan.

A week is a long time in football and so it proved for the 10s as they played away to Sporting Greystones where they came out the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline.

The home side were determined to reverse last week’s result and this they duly did. Max Roche scored the Newtown goal but unfortunately despite a lot of effort too many Newtown players never reached the heights of recent weeks.

Our under-12s lost 6-1 at home to Greystones ‘B’ in a game where nothing went right for them. Hannah Martin scored the Newtown goal.

Our under-14s played their first game of the Shield at home to Roundwood and they ran out deserving 6-2 winners. Jason Carthy with a hat trick and singles from Charlie Sullivan, Shane Dunleavy and Bobby Dowling accounted for the goals scored.

On the day Martin Kelly, Ryan Clarke and Marcel Kocajda were among those that starred.

All fixtures competitive and non-trophy will finish weekend of November 18 and 19, followed by the WDSL Awards, Presentation Day in the Parkview Hotel Sunday, November 25, 2018, (details times etc. to follow in October).

Our ever-popular Development Squad has started back and will continue every weekend from 10am until 11am and new players are welcome. The cost is €2 per head. At the moment we have a large number of boys and girls attending each week and thankfully at the moment we have the required coaches needed but we wouldn’t say no to a few more volunteer coaches.

If you think you can give an hour or two each week, please contact our secretary at the contact details below. Recently three of our coaches who have been doing great work with the Development Squad took and completed their Kickstart 1 coaching course. Well done to Geraldine Keogh, Nathan Kelly Tynan and Grace Kelly for the completion of this course.

Our Last Man Standing competition had 103 Players heading into Week 2 and we will have 90 players going into Week 3 after we unfortunately lost 13 players. It could have been more but Manchester United created a shock after coming from 2-0 down to beat Newcastle United 3-2.

The prize pot for the competition is €550. Week 3 fixtures will not be until the weekend of Saturday 20th-Monday 22nd October 2018 due to the International football break and these fixtures will be distributed to all players on Monday, October 15. Thank you everyone for your continued support.

You can keep updated with the progress of our competition and the rules on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
