BASKETBALL
Hard luck to the under-16 girls’ basketball team who lost their first match of the season to Woodbrock College. It was a tough game as we had a number of players out due to injury. While it is always a team effort particular attention should be given to Keri Williams, who played with conviction and great energy. Her defensive moves kept the overall defeat a low score. The girls are a good, solid team and with continued commitment and effort we should have a good season.
Good luck to the under-16 and under-19 girls’ basketball teams who are due to play the Dominican this Friday on our home turf... our tiny home turf.
Our under-16 and under-19 boys basketball teams have played their first matches of the season with our under-16s enjoying a very good win against Coláiste Raithin and our under-19s suffering defeat against the same opposition. However, the under-19 team made up for it in their second game, beating Woodbrook College in overtime.
This was a fantastic win for the lads who despite a very poor start, showed tremendous character in the third and fourth quarters to claw their way back into the game. The whole team played their part in a fantastic comeback, with James Cardiff and Niki Moelders particularly to the fore.
BOYS RUGBY
The first year boys’ team played a blitz in Gorey against a number of schools. For many this was their first exposure to rugby and they acquitted themselves admirably against some teams which included some second years and an odd third year. There were some stand out displays by the following; Aran Cavanagh, Nicholas McAllistar, Stephen Duke, Jake Nally, Oliver Purser, George Tutty, Jake Whyte and Oliver Purser. George Prestage put in some excellent tackles and Daniel Issac scored a couple of excellent tries showing great pace.
The junior boys’ team have had two matches and recorded two wins. In the first they played St Benildus college with some stand out performances from Nicky Molders, Charlie Pearse and Calvin Kirwya. Their second match was against Coláiste Carlow in the league which they won 27-10. Try scorers included Scott Fitzpatrick, Jake Law and Toby Stevens. They were led admirably by Nicky molders. The diminutive second row of Sam Moloney and Barra Cullen put in a great shift and their was some great bravery from half backs Peter Schmitt and Eoin Gavigan.
The senior boys have had two matches and recorded two wins vs Kilkenny (44-31) and Coláiste Carlow (62-14). In the first match an end to end match and exhausting one played in searing heat (the ref looked decidedly red faced at the finish), tries flowed and there were some excellent displays notably by Adam Neill, Christopher Fitzpatrick, Thorfinn Newton and skipper come placekicker Rossa Marron.
The second match in the league while not against the strongest opposition saw the team show there full array of skills with Nicky Flood pulling the strings at out half. He was aided by an excellent backline of Thorfinn Newton, Charlie Williams, Ronan Cullen, Conor Collier, Gavin Fogarty and debutant Jamie Noble. The platform was provided by the pack with a stellar defensive display by Billy Ferns and some silky breaks by Max Richards and marauding runs of Alex Wilding and Christopher Fitzpatrick. Not to be outdone Richard Murray and Scott Bond put in a solid shift and Rossa Marron and Adam Neill were a thorn in the oppositions side.
GIRLS RUGBY
The senior girls competed in the South East Leinster seven a side qualifier tournament in Carlow. This was the schools first competition at this level and they did not disappoint qualifying for the Leinster finals. Led by skipper Ella Roberts the side displayed great flair from a solid platform made by Nicola Schmitt, Ella Richards and Beth Roberts. Try scorers included Victoria Elms Kinlan, Grace Hurley and Mel Clarke. All bodes well for the future and the school looks forward to its first Leinster final. The girls were forever grateful by the regular refreshments provided by Philip Erasmus.
Juniors – Like their senior counterparts this was the school’s first competition at this level. They were unlucky to miss out on qualification by points scored winning one match drawing one and narrowly losing the other by one score. Notable performances were put in by all including ; Prudence Issac, Lara Prestage, Issabelle Cooney and Jane Neill. While disappointed by the end result the girls can look forward with optimism to their next tournament. It has to be noted this side was managed very well by TYs Nicky Flood and Max Roberts. All in EGS look forward to rugby this year.
CROSS COUNTRY
Congratulations to all the students who took part at the Wicklow schools cross country competition this week. Especially, the medal winners Brian O’Hara, Archie Bremer and Senan Sloan Kelly from Form One, Anna Hudson, Lily Mullally, Grace Wakeford, Yennupaak Yennusick, Robery Cherry and Scott Fitzpatrick from Form Two.
TRANSITION YEAR NEWS
This week has been relatively quiet for our TY’s, only trips to Devils Glen abseiling into the plunge pool, cross fit sessions, sea swimming, batter week, thesis launch, yoga, zoology fieldwork, oh and reptile haven bringing a whole host of fantastic reptiles has kept the busy.
YSI class – For our Young Social Innovator class this year we are helping out Team Hope with their Christmas Shoebox Appeal and we are looking to get one shoebox from each student in our school, which would get us up to around 360 shoeboxes. We are also holding fundraisers like a bake sale and a non-uniform day. Our deadline for getting shoeboxes in is October 26 and we would appreciate any help we can get.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Gavin Kennedy, who has just left the school, on winning the Engineering Technology Teachers Assoc. First prize in the South Dublin Area project competition. The projects were marked by Lecturers in Tallaght IT and Gavin beat the second place student by just 1/2 a mark. A fantastic achievement for Gavin.
Congratulations to Charles Heather, who represented the school in Sutton last weekend at their Dinghy Sailing Regatta. Charles was placed in the top 10 out of about 50 boats over the two-day event.
