Train horror as teen loses her fingers

October 2008

-

A WICKLOW teenager had all five fingers severed from her hand after fainting and falling in front of train at Wicklow Train Station yesterday (Tuesday) morning.

However, the driver’s swift action in halting the train prevented what could have been a worse, possibly fatal accident.

Paramedics rushed to the station following the accident and spent 45 minutes stabilising the teenager.

Wicklow Fire Brigade searched the tracks for her severed fingers while she was been treated.

All five fingers were recovered and once stabilised the young girl was brought by ambulance to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin.

Iarnród Éireann spokesman Barry Kenny said the accident occurred at around 9.40 a.m. as the young girl fell in front of the 7.40 a.m. train going to Dublin.

All trains were then stopped as emergency services investigated the incident.

‘We couldn’t move the train because emergency services were searching the tracks in a bid to recover the severed fingers,’ explained Mr. Kenny.

Transfer buses were provided for all passengers travelling on the Dublin-bound train.

The train station remained closed for investigation for the rest of the day with bus transfers provided for passengers.
