Big wins at Barndarrig Ploughing Championship
THIRTY-FOUR competitors from all over Ireland took part in this year’s Barndarrig Ploughing Championship held on Saturday on the lands of David and Gordon Agar.
As well as plenty of Garden County representation, there were also contenders from Wexford, Carlow, Dublin, Louth and Roscommon.
The Champion Class Senior winner was Pat Furlong of Co Wexford. The Champion Class Junior winner was John Shortt from Co Wicklow.
Billy Donnelly was the winner of the 3 Furrow Senior Class category, while the 3 Furrow Standard Class victor was John Summers.
The Vintage Mounted Class was won by Eamonn White. Sammy Woolmington from Wicklow was the winner of another Vintage Mounted Classic category. David Gratton from Co Louth finished first in the Vintage Trailer Class and David Levingstone of Wicklow won the Vintage Single Furrow Class.
The Reversible Class Champion was won by Tom Donnelly from Co Wicklow. The Reversible Class Standard winner was Paul Doran. Kevin Doran of Wicklow won the Horse Class, while fellow Wicklow manAlan Hughes was the winner of the Novice Class.
There are five ploughing societies in Wicklow – Barndarrig, Carnew, Rathdown, Roundwood and Enniskerry – all of whom host their own ploughing championship during the year. The Barndarrig Society dates back to the late 1930s and currently includes two national champions in Paddy Doyle and Liam Hamilton.
