RAILWAY HISTORY

Bray and North Wicklow readers interested in joining the Irish Railway Record Society which holds lectures on various aspects of Ireland’s railway history and heritage, can obtain a membership applicatio­n form from membership@irrs.ie. There is a distinct Bray connection in the latest issue of the Society’s journal which shows a remarkable previously unseen photograph of the 1900 Harcourt Street accident as the result of which Bray engine driver Gorge Hyland’s right arm had to be amputated in hospital. Hyland survived this life changing surgery and went on to work in Bray station as one-armed clerical officer till the 1930s, when he retired. He died on August 14, 1943, and was buried on St Peter’s Cemetery, Little Bray.

BRAY CUALANN HISTORICAL SOCIETY

James Scannell will be the guest presenter for the Thursday, October 18, meeting of the Bray Cualann Historical Society, the local history society for Bray and North Wicklow Society, at which he will present his illustrate­d talk ‘The Sinking of the RMS Leinster – October 10, 1918, and the last days of the war’ at 8 p.m. in the Royal Hotel, Main Street, Bray, and all are welcome to attend – admission €5.

Members and Supports of the Bray Cualann Historical Society are also reminded that the Old Bray Society has published a special issue of the Bray Historical Record ‘First World War Special Issue’ which recalls those from the county who took part in this conflict. LIONS CLUB SEEKS YOUNG AMBASSADOR

Bray Lions Club has begun its search for a young ambassador

who will represent the club in an internatio­nal competitio­n. Young people under 19 in June 2019 who are making a contributi­on to their local community through voluntary work, sporting activity or good citizenshi­p. A young ambassador will be selected to represent Ireland in the European Final. Bray Lions Club will sponsor its Young Ambassador participat­ion at all levels of the completion should they qualify.
