DANCE ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE

Come and enjoy an evening with the Mermaid Art Centre’s dance artists in residence, Karen Gleeson and Aoife McAtamney, from 8 p.m. ‘Hear my hands’ by Karen Gleeson is a multi-disciplina­ry collaborat­ive film installati­on, fusing dance, audio and video projection. Aoife McAtamney will perform a contempora­ry dance solo called ‘Muse’, which is a dynamic piece in which the nine Greek muses of the arts are the motivation. Tickets cost €16 and are available from the Mermaid.

CIRCUS GERBOLA

Circus Gerbola will be at the Eire Og grounds on Mill Road, Greystones at 7.30 p.m. The show includes circus artists from Mexico, Austria, England, Germany and Ireland as well as the flying trapeze, magic, quick changes, clown and acrobatics, all in the company of horses, ponies, dogs and goats. CHEERIOS CHILDLINE BREAKFAST

West Wicklow Youthreach is hosting a Cheerios Childline Breakfast Morning from 10 a.m. to noon at Blessingto­n Further Education and Training Centre. A donation of €4 is asked from anyone attending and all proceeds will go to Childline.

GARDA BAND CONCERT

Arklow CBS presents the Garda Band in concert at 8 p.m. in the Arklow Bay Hotel. Cór na hAbhann, Stephen Walker and students from the school will be among those also performing on the night. UNDERNEATH

Fishamble presents Pat Kinevane’s third solo play, Underneath, directed by Jim Culleton, at 8 p.m. in the Mermaid Arts Centre. This play is a blackly comic, rich and vivid tale of a life lived in secret, a testament to the people who live on the fringes, under the nose of everyday life. It explores the surface, and what lies underneath. Tickets cost €18 and are available from the Mermaid. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19

ANDY IRVINE

Musician, singer and songwriter, Andy Irvine has maintained his highly individual performing skills throughout his 45-year career. From Sweeney’s Men in the mid-’60s, to the enormous success of Planxty in the ’70s and then from Patrick Street to Andy Irvine and Dónal Lunny’s Mozaik, Andy has been a world music pioneer and an icon for traditiona­l music and musicians. Tickets for Andy’s performanc­e at the Hot Spot in Greystones cost €18-20 and are available from the venue. Doors open at 8 p.m.

SPAGHETTI AND JAZZ

Enjoy an Italian feast buffet in the Bear Paw Deli in Greystones from 7 p.m., then head over to the Whale Theatre for a concert at 8.30 p.m. Music will be provided by jazz guitarist Francesco Amico and his quartet. In the company of Patrice Brun (Tenor saxophone), Peter Erdei (electric bass guitar) and Andy O’Farrell (drums), the band will explore both jazz standards and original compositio­ns. Tickets are limited, cost €29.50 and are available from the Whale. Tickets for the concert alone cost €15.

SCREENDANC­E LABORATORY SALON

In partnershi­p with Klinkerdin Experiment­al Arts Salon, Wicklow Screendanc­e Laboratory will host an evening of dance performanc­e, dance film screening and discussion, with special guests at Perfect Theatre Studios, Bray Bowl, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Featured film/dance artists Tara Brandel, Steve Woods and Emma Fitzgerald will present and discuss works, and there will be live performanc­es from Saoirse Doyle, Veronika Sardiko and Haddas Eshel). A number of films will also be screened. This is a free event, no booking necessary.

PARANOIA

Only the brave will visit the Glenart Estate and the terrifying Paranoia. Set in an old abandoned asylum, it features the mortuary, house of horrors, the abandoned asylum, quarantine rooms, house of dolls, forest of screams and, new for 2018, the dark house, the cell and the ward. From 7 p.m. to midnight, there are limited tickets (costing €12.50) still available which should be booked in advance. This event is not suitable for under 13 years.

BRENDAN GRACE

Brendan’s latest show includes the best and most requested pieces from his vast repertoire over the last 48 years. His sense of timing and ability to read an audience is without equal. A brilliant character actor, his ‘Bottler’ character is legendary and his interpreta­tion of the ‘Irish Wedding’ will forever remain a masterpiec­e. Grace hits the stage at the Mermaid Arts Centre at 8 p.m. and tickets, costing €30, are available from the Mermaid.

PARISH SUPPER DANCE

The annual Kilbride Parish Supper Dance will take place in Greystones Rugby Club. Tickets are available from 087 6716745.

GLAM AND GLITZY FASHION SHOW

McMullans in Arklow is celebratin­g its 90th anniversar­y by hosting a charity fashion show in Arus Lorcain in aid of Arklow Community Action Resource Centre. The show will feature guests B Couture Bridal, Fayebella and John Flood, shoes by Ralph O’Connor and hats by Linda Fleming Millinery. There will be a cheese and wine reception before the show starts at 8.30 p.m. Tickets cost €12.

COURTHOUSE CAFE

The Courthouse Cafe is back in commission with ‘An Exploratio­n of the Words and Music of Paul Simon’ at 8.30 p.m. This fundraiser for the Courthouse Arts Centre features a line-up of spoken word artists and musicians that includes Frank Gallagher and Brian Whelan. Tickets cost €10 and are available from the Courthouse.

RACE NIGHT

Dunlavin and District Forum is holding a race night in aid of the Christmas lights upgrade at 9 p.m. in Burke’s Bar. Horses cost €10 each and can be purchased from any committee member.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20 COUNTRY MARKET

North Wicklow Country Market will hold its Christmas tastings of cakes, puddings and mince pies from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. at Newcastle Community Centre. Customers can sample the goods and place orders for Christmas, if desired.

LIFE-SAVING TRAINING

Community First Responders invite people to come along to Donard Hall between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., where they could learn some life-saving CPR and AED training, as well as some handy tips and advice. No booking necessary.

WOODPECKER TALK

Author Declan Murphy begins his series of six talks on gardens and birds at Bray Library with a lecture on the Great Spotted Woodpecker in Ireland from 11 a.m. to noon.

HALLOWE’EN TRAIN

From 11 a.m. to 5.20 p.m., jump aboard the Rathwood Express, visit the wacky wizard, the spooky forest, treasure island and the magical pumpkin patch and try to save terrible twins Wizzie and Lizzie from the wicked witch. Children will also carve their own pumpkin and enjoy a hot chocolate. Suitable for younger children (babies up to eight years old), it gets a little scarier after 4 p.m. for bigger children. The cost is €10 per child and €7 per adult.

SPOOKY FANCY DRESS DISCO

The Hillview Residents Committee will be holding a children’s fancy dress disco at the BBH Centre in Wicklow town from 5.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be party games, face painting and prizes for the best dressed. Entry is €1 per child.

WICKLOW SCREENDANC­E LABORATORY

Wicklow Screendanc­e Laboratory will host three individual sessions of dance film screenings, dance performanc­es and talks at the Mermaid Arts Centre. The first session, ‘Internatio­nal Focus’, features screenings and discussion­s and takes place from noon to 2 p.m. The second session, ‘Raw Material’, will run from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and look at the body in motion and feature a number of dance performanc­es and a focus on scrath films. The final session will be a series of 17 Irish and internatio­nal screendanc­e screenings and takes place from 6 p.m. to 8.45 p.m. The sessions cost €6 each or €15 for all three. WHAT WOULD MA SAY?

’What Would Ma Say?’, the hilarious play based on the best-selling book by Kathleen Doyle, hits the stage in the Tramway Theatre in Blessingto­n at 8 p.m. Directed by Ger Ronan, the play introduces the audience to a remarkable family and their exploits growing up in Dublin in the 1950s and 1960s. Ma may be an ordinary woman with very little education behind her but she’s not so ordinary in the way she learned to survive. Tickets cost €15 and are on sale at Hennessy’s next door and the Office Shop.

DEAR ATTRACTA

Andrew Deering presents ‘Dear Attracta’ at 8 p.m. in Rathsallag­h Golf Club in aid of Donard/Dunlavin Meals on Wheels. Cork’s favourite agony aunt, Attracta Tension, will dispense her no-nonsense advice and regale the audience with some stories of her formative years. Tickets cost €40 (includes dinner and the show). THE 2 JOHNNIES

Comedy duo The 2 Johnnies will perform in Germaine’s in Baltinglas­s at 8.30 p.m. in aid of the Donard Glen Camogie Club. Doors open at 8 p.m. with the show starting at 8.30 p.m. Tickets cost €20 and are available from any member of the camogie club or from Ed’s Fruit and Veg in Dunlavin.

COMEDY IMPROV HORROR SHOW

Having turned The Whale Theatre, Greystones into a rockin’ House of Fun back in June, the terrifying threesome of Joe Rooney (Father Ted), Sharon Mannio (Bridget & Eamon) and Danny Kehoe (Moone Boy) return for another night of madcap improv brilliance at Whale Theatre. The trio will be at the Greystones venue at 8 p.m. Tickets are €15 and are available from the Whale.

SOCIAL NIGHT

A social in aid of the senior citizens’ Christmas party will take place in the Hollywood Centre with music by the Wicklow Man. Refreshmen­ts will be served at the interval. Admission is €10 or €5 for students.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21 UNWANTED GIFT SALE

There will be all kinds of everything on offer as an unwanted gift sale takes place in the De La Salle Parish Centre in Wicklow town from 9.30 a.m. until 2 p.m. The sale is a fundraiser for Wicklow Cancer Support and St Patrick’s Church.

HARVEST WREATHMAKI­NG

Jenny Murphy of ‘Flowers by Moira’ will be providing a three-hour workshop, creating beautiful wreaths from harvest crops at Killrudder­y at noon. Jenny will use all-natural materials that are fully biodegrada­ble and all participan­ts will have a beautiful decorative wreath to take home at the end of the day. The workshop costs €70 (reduced rate for Killrudder­y members).

MET OPERA: SAMSON ET DALILA

Enjoy a satellite screening at 5 p.m. in the Whale Theatre of Saint-Saëns’s biblical epic Samson et Dalila, starring Elina Garanca and Roberto Alagna in the title roles. Laurent Naouri co-stars as the High Priest, with Elchin Azizov as the Philistine King Abimélech and Dmitry Belosselsk­iy as the Old Hebrew. Darko Tresnjak makes his Met debut directing the first new Met production of the opera in 20 years. Tickets cost €25 and are available from the Whale.
