Ashtown Lane alive to the sounds of mini rugby heaven

-

WICKLOW RFC’ under-9 and under-12s saw minis’ rugby action in bright and sunny conditions at home in Ashtown Lane on Sunday morning.

Wicklow’s under-9s hosted MU Barnhall RFC in an annual fixture. Both clubs fielded three teams and there were nine matches played in perfect conditions for running rugby.

The clubs agreed to play under the ‘silent touchline’ guidelines whereby parents and coaches only applauded play without any comment.

This proved to be very liberating for the players who put on a fine display with great handling and passing.

Both sets of players and sup- porters adjourned to the club house for refreshments following the games. Plans are in place for a return fixture later in the season.

Wicklow’s under-12s welcomed Wexford to the club with both teams delighted to have some game time for their large squads. They both played two exhilarating matches in brilliant sunshine on a day made for running rugby.

The teams did not disappoint and battled well for the ball moving it out wide at every opportunity. The contests were played in excellent spirits and the teams retired to the clubhouse after for a feast afterwards.

Next week sees Carlow and Arklow making their way to Ashtown Lane in what promises to be a great three way tie across all minis age groups.
