Magpies edge out the Glens

Newtown United picked up a hardearned three points when overcoming Glencormac United 3-2 at Ryder’s Field in their Andy McEvoy Premier clash on Sunday.

Dean McCormack fired the Glens in front late in the first-half, but the Magpies were quick to respond and Evan Moran lobbed the goalkeeper to equalise before the break.

Newtown began to gain a bit more control and Shane Doyle edged them in front before Dean Odlum grabbed their third with ten minutes remaining.

Simon Doyle pulled one back for the hosts to set up a nervy finish, but Newtown held out to take the spoils.

LFA Junior Cup second round

Ashford Rovers suffered the agony of a penalty shoot-out defeat as they lost out to New Park in their LFA Junior Cup second round clash in Kilkenny on Saturday.

The hosts held a 2-0 advantage at the break but the Wicklow representa­tives fought back bravely to force extra-time with Danny Byrne and Karl Earls hitting the back of the net.

However, it just wasn’t to be, with Ashford losing out 5-4 on penalties after an immense effort.

Pat O’Toole Division 1

Wicklow Town began their Pat O’Toole Division 1 campaign in style when they overcame Greystones United 3-2 on Sunday. Anthony Fermoyle and Colin McDevitt scored for a ’Stones side that had won their opening two games, but Town came out on top with goals from Johnny Carton, Eric Dunne and Liam Kavanagh.

Division 3

Dearg Celtic continued their impressive start to the season when edging out Shamrock Celtic 4-3 in Division 3 on Sunday.

Alan Power scored a double for the leagues leaders, with Michael Murphy and Alan Hudson adding a goal apiece as they made it four wins from four.

Shane O’Keeffe netted a hat-trick for Aughrim Rangers, with Stephen Doyle and Eoin Forsyth also getting in on the act during their thrilling 5-5 draw with Ballywaltr­im.

Elsewhere, Roundwood overcame Dargle Rovers 2-1 (see focus match).
