Wicklow make history

-

WICKLOW RFC made history on Saturday last when they fielded two teams in Phase 1 of the Under-14 Leinster League in sections A and B.

With two away games logistics was potentially an issue but the entire squad travelled by bus to both venues on a very wet day.

Portlaoise RFC was first up for the Section B team. This team was made up of our less experienced players and was an opportunity for these girls to get game time.

Portlaoise have a strong tradition at this level having led the Premier League last season and Wicklow knew they were in for a tough match. The Wicklow girls played heroically and scored three fine team tries but the Laois girls proved too strong on the day.

It was then on to Cill Dara RFC to play Portdara who are a combined club team made up of Portarlington RFC and Cill Dara RFC.

Unfortunately, Portdara couldn’t field a full team and conceded the fixture. It was then agreed to play a controlled training match which gave the Wicklow giris the match they wanted. Again, a heroic performance was delivered which saw the Wicklow side come out 28-12 on top against a physically bigger side.

Saturday was not about results but more about a combined squad of 30 girls travelling, playing and cheering together on a day that will long be remembered.

Next weekend two home fixtures against Naas and MU Barnhall.
