WICKLOW ROVERS

Our senior men got back to winning ways when they travelled to take on Greenhills/Greenpark FC on Saturday and came home with all three points when they recorded a comprehensive 7-0 victory. Gareth Murphy fired home an impressive individual scoring haul of four goals with Adam Cox not far behind when he netted a hat-trick.

The two lads proved a handful for the home defence as both players were in clinical form in front of goal. This was an excellent all-round team performance from the lads and they will be hoping they can kick on from this and go on a winning run.

The under 18 DDSL Youths 2 title hopes were dealt a blow when they went down 2-1 away to Firhouse Carmel in a disappointing performance from the lads. The lads never reached the standards they have set themselves and started the game very slowly.

In a tight first half there was nothing to separate the sides as they went in at the break scoreless. The second half was similar to the first with Rovers struggling to get a foothold in the game. It was no surprise when the home side went in front and soon afterwards, they went 2-0 up.

This seemed to wake the lads from their slumber as they quickly reduced the deficit when Luca Rampersaud fired home. Rampersaud, Daniel Harbourne and Daniel Fitzsimons all went closer to drawing Rovers level, but it wasn’t to be on a disappointing day.

The junior action was severely affected by the bad weather with several games falling victims of the heavy rain and high winds on Friday and Saturday. Of the games that did take place our 14A’s went down 4-2 to local neighbours Rathnew, Callum Gibney and Tom Hodgkinson notched the Rovers goals in what was a keenly contested game.

The under-13Bs went down 3-2 in a thriller away to Ashford Rovers. Peter Dunne put Wicklow in front, but the home side came blazing back to go 2-1 in front.

The lads showed great character to level late on, but they were cruelly denied when the home side netted the winner with the last kick of the game.

The under-15As were held to a 2-2 draw by Shankill FC in their DDSL league game. In a tightly contested encounter with no quarter given Rovers will rue not claiming all three points in this game. Stephen Kearns and Mark O’Brien nabbed the Rovers goals.

Our under-15 girls were involved in an 11-goal thriller away to Maynooth Town in the first round of the O’Neills cup. Unfortunately for the girls they lost out 7-4. The girls found themselves 2-0 down early on but a goal from Justine Cronin from the penalty spot gave them a foothold in the game. Maynooth responded with two more goals before Molly Sweeney made it 4-2, the teams swapped a goal a piece with Aoife Caffrey netting for Rovers and it was 5-3. Maynooth added two more goals before Molly Sweeney added her second of the game to complete the scoring. This was a highly entertaining game which had everything to keep the watching public entertained.

Our under-13As made the journey to Ashbourne in Meath to take on the local side in the semi-final of the All-Ireland Lions Club sponsored cup. In what was a tightly contested game between two evenly matched sides Rovers ran out winners by the minimum of margins winning 1-0. Stephen Gormley scored the all important goal to send the lads into the final where they will meet Tullamore. The final will take place in Dalymount Park home of League of Ireland side Bohemians on November 4.

Our Last Man Standing competition resumes this week with round 4 taking place. Going into round 4 we have 81 players left standing to battle it out for the title of Last Man Standing champion and the €500 prize. All remaining players should have their selections submitted by 7pm on Thursday night. Remember you can’t select a team you have already selected in the competition. The club would like to thank everyone who supported our Last Man Standing competition and we would like to wish all remaining players the very best of luck in the remainder of the competition.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

Heavy rain on Friday right through to all day on Saturday put paid to games involving our Academy, under-8, under-9 and under-14 teams.

One team who did play were the under-12s who travelled to the wilds of Ballyman to play Enniskerry. In a ding-dong tussle between the two teams the game ended 3-3. Newtown had to score three equalizers in the game through Patrick Martin (2) and Aaron Cawley.

In fact, according to the ‘Gaffer’ Rory, Patrick’s second goal and Newtown’s third equalizer from a free kick with the last kick of the game was Beckham like.

Among the players who starred on the day were Jack Coughlan and Patrick Martin.

Our under-10s hosted Avonmore on Sunday morning in glorious sunshine and came out on top by the odd goal in five. Ryan Collins with a superb header, Max Roche finishing of a lovely move and an own goal accounted for the Newtown goals.

On the day, best for Newtown were Aaron Roy, Pat Carey, Darren Fisher and Kacey Kelly.

Our under-11s completed their Champions League programme of matches with an away game against WDSL Academy and after a tight and evenly contested game Newtown lost their first game on a 1-0 score line.

Our under-12s player Hannah Martin scored the only goal of the game just before half-time. Best for Newtown were Rose Kelly-Tynan, PJ Duffy and Cormac Chance. The result however didn’t alter the final standings as Newtown topped the group with the Academy in second place.

The following are the fixtures for the week-ending Saturday, Sunday, October 20 and 21 - Development Squad practice every Saturday from 10am-11am; Academy team at home to Roundwood White ko Saturday at 11.30am; Under-8s at home to Carnew F.C. ko Saturday at 10.15am; Under-9s away to St Patricks, ko to be confirmed; Under-10s at home to Greystones Yellow ko Sunday at 11.30am; Under-11s - Champions League quarter-final to be confirmed; Under-12s at home to Sporting Greystones ko Saturday at 12.45pm; Under-14s at home to Avonmore F.C. ko Saturday at 11am.

All fixtures, competitive and non-trophy, will finish weekend of November 17/18, followed by the WDSL awards, presentation day in the Parkview Hotel on Sunday, November 25. (Details times etc to follow in Oct).

Our ever-popular Development Squad has started back and will continue every weekend from 10am until 11am and new players are welcome. The cost is €2 per head. At the moment we have a large number of boys & girls attending each week and thankfully at the moment we have the required coaches needed but we wouldn’t say no to a few more volunteer coaches. If you think you can give an hour or two each week, please contact our Secretary at the contact details below.

We have players from the club celebrating a birthday in the coming week and they are Tommy Martin from the Development Squad, John Paul Dunleavy and Donnacha Eager-O’Brien from the Academy team. Happy birthday lads from everyone at Newtown Juniors F.C.

Our Last Man Standing competition enters Week 3 next weekend. The prize pot for the competition is €550.
