-

The ‘Wicklow for Michael D’ campaign launch event took place last Thursday at The Martello.

Local speakers addressed the launch from arts, business and civil society.

Speakers included film producer Morgan O’Sullivan, journalist and author Valerie Cox, author Eilis Ní Anluain and artist Brigid O’Brien.

The event was followed by another on Sunday night, with ‘Music for Michael D’ at the Harbour Bar.

Organisers said that the campaign to re-elect the president is independent and non-party.

Campaign coordinator Ian McGahon welcomed everyone to the event. He spoke of President Higgins’ kindness, his contribution to arts and culture, humanitarianism and human rights, and other contributions to society.

Valerie Cox said that she had covered for RTE the visit of Queen Elizabeth to Ireland, and President Higgins’ subse- quent visit to England and said that he had represented the nation wonderfully.

Morgan O’Sullivan had supported Michael D Higgins seven years previously and spoke about his contribution to the film industry. ‘Michael for me is just so special,’ said Mr O’Sullivan, who recalled his amazing oratory bewitching an audience in LA during the promotion of My Left Foot. ‘He was so profound and interesting about Ireland, its place in the world, writing and the arts,’ he said.
