OPEN EVENING

The school’s annual open evening took place on Thursday, October 11, All fifth and sixth class students and their parents were invited to visit the school. Following a short talk guests were taken on guided tours around the school to visit the specialist classrooms and talk to the teachers and current students.

The night was a great success and we would like to thank the student leadership team who provided the tours and all the teachers and students involved in the various activities throughout the school.

SIXTH YEAR P/T MEETING

The sixth year parent-teacher meeting will take place on Tuesday, October 23, from 4 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. This is a most important meeting and we hope all the relevant parents can attend. It is a great opportunit­y to meet with your daughter’s teachers and discuss their progress as they prepare for their exams.

JUNIOR BAKE OFF

On Thursday, October 11, the kitchen in DCW was a hive of activity, as the 10 pairs of finalists in the Junior Bake Off set about baking their themed cakes for a special occasion.

The standard was extremely high and after much deliberati­on Ella Massey and Katelyn Byrne from third year were awarded the first prize for their Rainbow Marble cake. Second prize was awarded to first year students Saoirse Mitchell and Róisín Vise for their Easter Eggstravag­anza cake. The third prize was awarded to Rebecca Brennan and Olivia Kane also from first year, for their Shipwreck cake.

Congratula­tions to the prize winners and to all the students who reached the final stage of the competitio­n. A big thanks to the Home Economics Department for organising the event.

TRANSITION YEAR TRIP

On Monday, October 8, the TY students attended the AXA Road Safety show in the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire. The girls listened to heart breaking stories of personal tragedies due to accidents on the road. They also watched firemen attempt the difficult task of removing individual­s from crashed vehicles. The girls all agreed that it was a very worthwhile and thought-provoking trip which highlighte­d the dangers of poor driving.

TY CHARITY WORK

As charity work is an integral part of the TY programme the students engage in a variety of activities throughout the year for the purpose of fundraisin­g much needed funds. Two such initiative­s took place this week, Jersey day and Rose Week collection. The proceeds from Jersey Day were donated to Sharpes Hill Animal Sanctuary and the Irish Guide Dogs Associatio­n while the Rose Week collection was in aid of Autism Ireland.

HOMEWORK CLUB

The homework club for junior students is now up and running once again. It takes place every Tuesday and Thursday from 1.20 p.m. to 1.50 p.m. The club provides additional support in a friendly environmen­t for any junior students in need of extra help. One-to-one tuition in all the core subjects is provided by the senior students. Applicatio­n forms are available from the Year Head.

BASKETBALL

Congratula­tions to both the under-16 and under-19 basketball teams on their strong performanc­es against East Glendaloug­h School. These games took place on October 5 Both teams played to their potential and had very convincing wins. Many thanks to East Glendaloug­h for hosting.

HOCKEY

The season for the senior hockey team will begin on Tuesday, October 16, as they play host to their local rivals East Glendaloug­h School. A keenly contested match is anticipate­d so the very best of luck to both teams. The second fixture is also a home game as DCW play host to Drogheda Grammar School on October 24Training continues every Monday from 3.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.

GYMNASTICS

The after school gymnastic club has commenced and takes place every Wednesday in Fatima Hall from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. A wide variety of discipline­s are on offer from floor to beam, bars and trampoline. Students of all ages are welcome regardless of experience. Equestrian.

Congratula­tions to third year student Jessica Phelan on her exceptiona­l performanc­e at the Internatio­nal Pony Competitio­n held in France recently. Her commitment to the sport was rewarded as she received a ribbon for third place. All at DCW are very proud of her achievemen­t.

SIXTH YEAR ECOLOGY TRIP

Due to the bad weather forecast the sixth year ecology trip to Glendaloug­h was cancelled. The trip will be rearranged for a date early in November.

FRIENDSHIP WEEK

The theme of friendship was the cross-curricular theme in many of the classes this week in DCW. A wide variety of activities took place and art work displayed throughout the corridors highlighti­ng the importance of being a good friend. On Friday, October 12, the Ember Leaders and Ms Flood met with all the first year students in Fatima Hall. Brownies were distribute­d as the girls designed and exchanged friendship cards. The activity was enjoyed by all and a special word of thanks to Ms Flood and the fifth year students for organising the event.
