SENIOR GIRLS RUGBY

EGS enjoyed an excellent day in Naas. After morning skills training the girls went unbeaten in all their matches. Captain Ella Roberts scored a hatrick and Grace Hurly ran an excellent try after a superb break by Beth Roberts. There were scores also from Vicky Kinlan, Keri Williams and Holly Jenkinson. All these came from a superb platform set by Ella Richards, Nicola Schmit and Layla Souibki. The girls now progress to the national finals in Donnybrook in November.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

So it was an eventful few days for the EGS under-16 and under-19 girls’ basketball teams as they experienced the lows and highs of this exciting sport. Both teams lost out to the Dominican College on our own home turf. The under-16s put up a great fight to equalise in the last quarter but the experience of some good plays put into effect by the opposition meant that the end was not in our favour. The under-19s also suffered defeat against a side that was particularly strong.

However, as with all sports the girls picked themselves up and put on a great display against Coláiste Chill Mhantáin and both matches provided some good shooting and effective plays. This was the high we were searching for as both teams proved successful. It’s a positive and important aspect of school life that pupils (and coaches) face these challenges and enjoy the opportunity to win and lose together.

As Alan Cox, a former principal of EGS, once told our teams ‘24 hours, that’s all you give to a win or a loss in sports and then you move on to the next challenge’. It’s a valuable life lesson to apply. Thank you to ALL the teams for their effort and commitment. Well done to all the girls.

EGS HOCKEY

Written by Rhiannon Wynn O’Sullivan third year Student: The Interpro’s under-16s Hockey Tournament held in Three Rock Rovers recently, was the most amazing experience for me. It was the culmination of a summer of really hard work and dedication. The coaches were always positive and gave me so much encouragement. I learnt so much. I always looked forward to our training sessions. The early starts and sometimes long drives never felt like a chore, but only something to look forward too. I have grown as a player, in confidence and ability and was never prouder when I walked onto to the pitch in my gear, representing South East Leinster for my first match against Ulster. Really tough opponents, but with determination and strong defending, we managed a draw.

Our next match the following morning, was against Munster. We scored the first goal, but against and a very strong attacking team, lost 3-1. Later that day we played Connaught. With only minutes to go we scored, winning 1-0. Yah.. Tired but elated we made our way back to the hotel. The next morning, we met our toughest opponents, Leinster. Regardless of the result they had already deservedly won the Tournament. We defended well and missed a few opportunities but eventually with so many short corners, lost 4-0. I will cherish the camaraderie I experienced with the girls, the laughs, the friendships, our support to each other, our prematch dance.

I loved every minute of the experience. I want to thank my amazing and dedicated Coaches, Donal, Alan and Ivanna, my Strength and Conditioning Coach, Trevor and Team Manager, Alex, who has always believed in me.

TRANSITION YEAR NEWS

This week has been one big build up to our first Dublin trip on Friday. This saw the year embark on a puzzle filled problem solving extravaganza in Go Quest. This was as part of maths week and it proved to be a brilliant challenge. A big shout out to the teachers team, aptly named ‘with age comes wisdom’ for topping the leader board. The rooms involved fiendish mental feats as well as physical challenges. Think Crystal Maze and you’ve got it.

There followed a really interesting trip to the Epic exhibition in Dublin. This is the world’s first fully interactive museum and charts Irish migrant history, from the famine, through Ned Kelly the outlaw to Irish music and GAA in Argentina.A fabulous day was had by all and even the rain couldn’t dampen our enthusiasm.
