HISTORY SOCIETY

Last Thursday night, Pádraig Laffan, chairman of the Foxrock Local History Club and the Federation of Local History Societies (FOLHS), opened the autumn programme of the (Enniskerry History Society in the Powerscour­t Arms and Country House Hotel, at which he presented his lecture recalling ‘The Lord Anglesey Scandal’ relating to Field Marshal Henry William Paget, first Marquess of Anglesey, KG, GCB, GCH, PC (May 17, 1768 – April 29, 1854), styled Lord Paget between 1784 and 1812 and known as the Earl of Uxbridge between 1812 and 1815, British Army officer and politician, and who was involved in famous scandal.

The next events of interest for Enniskerry History Society members and supporters are tonight’s (Wednesday) 8 p.m. lecture by Ms Bernardine Ruddy, president of the Old Dublin Society on ‘Watson’s Nursery: Clontarf to Killiney, 1884-1868’ to the Dun Laoghaire Borough Historical Society in the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire – all welcome – admission €3; tomorrow’s (Thursday) 8 p.m. lecture by James Scannell recalling ‘The Sinking of the RMS Leinster – October 1918 and the last days of the War’ to the Bray Cualann Historical Society in the Royal Hotel Bray – all welcome, admission. €5; Saturday’ 2.30 p.m. lecture by Denis Kirby on ‘The second Leinsters in the Battle for Vimy Ridge’ to the Western Front Associatio­n in the lecture theatre of the Museum of Decorative Arts and History, Collins Barracks, Benburb Street, Dublin seven – donation of €3 appreciate­d, and next Wednesday night’s 6 p.m. lecture by Colm Lennon on ‘Richard Stanihurst (1547-1618): Dublin’s Earliest Historian’ to the Old Dublin Society in Dublin City Library and Archive, 138-144 Pearse Street, Dublin two. Members and supporters of the Enniskerry History Society are also reminded that the Old Bray Society has published a special issue of the Bray Historical Record – ‘First World War Special Issue’ which recalls those from the county who took part in this conflict. Opening hours for the library which is located on Church Road, Enniskerry, are – Tuesday and Friday: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m., and Saturday: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. New members to the library are always very welcome. MEALS ON WHEELS

The Meals on Wheels Service operates in Enniskerry and Kilmacanog­ue and delivers hot meals every Tuesday and Thursday to older people in their homes. It’s an opportunit­y to connect with the community and provide a hot meal and social contact call to older people in the area. We are looking for volunteer drivers who can give up two or three hours twice a month to facilitate this much needed service. RECYCLE CLOTHES WEEK

The Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh will be collecting clothes in aid of the centre from Monday, November 5, to Friday, November 9. You can drop in your clothes bag throughout the week up till midday on the Friday. Thank you for your support.

BASKET WEAVING WORKSHOP

In this full-day basket making workshop participan­ts will learn to make a traditiona­l willow basket. This workshop is relaxed and enjoyable with a focus on traditiona­l Irish basket-making techniques on Saturday, November 3, and Sunday, November 11. WE LOVE ART

Art and crafts classes for children of primary school age take place on Monday afternoons. Classes cover a wide range of art and craft techniques and processes, giving kids an outlet for creative self-expression while learning new skills. DRAMA SCHOOL

Drama classes are a fantastic way of developing confidence and encouragin­g creativity and imaginatio­n. Drama modules will incorporat­e improvisat­ion, mime, script work, vocal training and acting skills. Students will also learn from the Irish Board of Speech and Drama syllabus and be afforded opportunit­ies to take graded examinatio­ns under a fully qualified teacher.
