Coolkenno and Clonmore unite to honour Mick

- MICK FURLONG CUP

SATURDAY last seen Coolkenno and Clonmore GAA clubs come together to remember the late Michael (Mick) Furlong.

A former player with Clonmore, over the past 20 years he became an integral part of the committee in Coolkenno.

Mick was the club’s treasurer before his passing after a short illness in January of this year. To honour his memory both clubs came together to do battle in the inaugural Michael Furlong Memorial Cup. Ironically the occasion also seen former Wicklow players Robert Doyle manager of Clonmore and Damien Mc- Mahon (Coolkenno) take charge of both teams.

John Keenan obliged his refereeing services for the game which was played in a very sporting manner throughout. Coolkenno will rue the chances missed throughout this game between. Clonmore went in four points at the break and had extended this to eight points with 15 minutes remaining. Coolkenno managed to get the deficit back to two points but time ran out.

Mick’s two daughters, Jackie and Noeleen, were on hand to present the inaugural plaque to Clonmore captain Enda McGrath after the game.

During half time of the adult’s game, the under-9 teams from both clubs played against each other also. A glorious day weather wise, entertaini­ng football on show with both clubs in the parish of Clonmore coming together to remember one of their great members of the community

Over €1,000 was raised from the gate collection with all proceeds going to the Clonmore Cancer Trust. This is a fund which Mick was also a key member of that was establishe­d to assist with families in the parish who are receiving cancer treatment.
