Comfortable for Carnew

Emmets claim ‘B’ crown after clash with Glenealy

CARNEW EMMETS GLENEALY 2-3 0-1

CARNEW EMMETS ran out comfortable winners in the final of the Under-14 ‘B’ camogie championship played at Pearse’s Park, Arklow on Saturday last.

This game was played on a perfect playing surface with the beautiful sunshine creating a scene more reminiscent of mid-summer than mid-autumn.

Allanah Dagge, who had a great game all through at midfield for the Carnew girls, got her side off the mark when she pointed in the second minute.

It turned out that scores were difficult to get with both sets of defenders not allowing too many opportunities. The flow of play up and down the field was even with Glenealy creating as many opportunities as their opponents.

However, they came up against a very resolute Carnew full-back line where Erin Kinsella, Hannah Munroe and Emma Kinnear made sure that in all situations the ball was only going one way - back out.

The midfield exchanges and play in the middle third of the field were evenly balanced. The Carnew full-forward Andrea Kearney broke the deadlock when she netted her side’s first goal on 20 minutes.

Abbie Farrell was doing well between the posts for Glenealy but there was little she could do when Carnew corner-forward Katie Wafer gained possession and raced through for her side’s second goal after 25 five minutes. The half-time break came with Carnew ahead by 2-1 to 0-0.

Glenealy tried might and main to get on the scoreboard early in the second half. Jessica Byrne, Saraid Dolan, Leanne O’Neill, Shauna Kelly, Kelly O’Neill and Ciara Jameson were playing well but they were up against Ciara Wafer, Emma Kelly and crisp striking Allanah Dagge, who with centre forward Erin Callaghan carried a lot of ball at the Glenealy defence.

Dagge scored both of Carnew’s second half points from play. Glenealy eventually got their deserved reward when Shauna Kelly pointed a free with four minutes left in the game.

Final score was Carnew 2-3, Glenealy 0-1.

After the game the trophy for winning the U-14 B Camogie championship was presented on behalf of Wicklow Co. Camogie Board to Carnew captain by Serge Goetelen

Scorers: Carnew - Andrea Kearney 1-0, Katie Wafer 1-0, Allanah Dagge 0-3.
