Carton’s treble not enough for Wicklow Town

-

Pat O’Toole Division 1

Wicklow Town’s Johnny Carton must have had mixed emotions on Sunday evening as he fired in a superb hat-trick but still ended up on the losing side.

Avonmore FC came out on top by the odd goal in seven in their Pat O’Toole Division 1 clash, with Callum Pursey contributing a double and Ryan Cahill and Danny Byrne adding a goal apiece.

A double from Darren Collopy helped St Anthony’s to a 3-2 victory over Rathnew, with Patrick Woods also hitting the back of the net for the winners.

Elsewhere, Newtown United B ran out 4-2 winners away to Conary United (see focus match).

Division 3

Arklow Town were on cloud nine on Sunday, after overwhelming Coolboy Rangers 9-0 in their Division 3 match.

Conor Dodd hit the back of the net four times for the winners, while Craig Ledwith and Dean Doyle both added doubles, with Dillon Mordaunt also getting in on the act.

There was also nine goals in the meeting of Carnew AFC B and Avonmore, but this was a much closer affair, with the latter prevailing 5-4 after a thrilling contest.

Andrew Browne and Darren Beavor both bagged doubles for Avonmore, with Jacob Hamilton grabbing their other goal and Jack Kearney, JJ McCrea, Cillian Gilligan and Jonathan Smyth replying.

Ashford Rovers ran out convincing 4-0 winners over Arklow United C, with Jason Farrell, Seán Beale and Chris Sillery (two) getting their goals.

Aidan Small was the match winner for Shamrock Celtic, netting both their goals in a 2-0 win over Roundwood, while Tom Treanor and Jay Fitzpatrick got on the scoresheet for Dargle Rovers, but they lost out 3-2 to Ballywaltrim.

FAI Junior Cup

There was no joy for the sides proudly flying the flag for the Wicklow League in the FAI Junior Cup, with Ashford Rovers and St Peter’s both losing on the road, to Suncroft and Birr Town respectively.

Suncroft took an early lead against Ashford but the Wicklow representatives fought back well and an Andy Earls goal drew them level before the interval.

However, it wasn’t to be as Suncroft scored two goals in second-half injury time to seal a 3-1 victory.

St Peter’s travelled to Offaly to play Combined Counties League representives Birr Town, but unfortunately lost out on a 5-3 scoreline.

John Tobin Youths League

Robbie Fowler was the star man for Arklow United at they overcame Ashford Rovers in their John Tobin Youths League encounter.

The impressive Fowler helped himself to a hat-trick as the Arklow side ran out 3-1 winners.
