Avonmore see off Newtown

Emphatic 7-3 away victory

- GAVIN FORDE at Newtown

AVONMORE came out on top in amazing 10-goal thriller against Newtown at the Community Grounds in Newtown on Saturday morning with emphatic 7-3 victory.

The game began with the Avonmore side dominating possession with quick passing between one another and some great one touch football which made for great viewing for the spectators at the game, but despite all of Avonmore’s possession it was the home side Newtown who broke the dead lock with a great counter attack on the seventh minute. As Avonmore were pressing the Newtown defence managed to get the ball clear as far as the half way line, Charlie Sullivan then went on a great run into the penalty area and slotted the ball home to give his side the lead.

Avonmore had many chances to get an equalising goal as striker Christian Carter hit the post twice and the cross bar three times, the ball just wouldn’t go into the back of the net and Avonmore started to get frustrated.

In the 12th minute, the home side found their second goal of the game much like their first, a great counter attack again from defending an attack from Avonmore, defender Sean Bishop cleared the ball high into the Newtown half to find Ryan Clarke who beat two Avonmore defenders before slotting the ball into the bottom corner, two shots on goal and two counter attacks meant the home side led the game.

Avonmore kept fighting to get back into the game and they finally got their reward on the 20th minute. Cathal Baker made a great run down the left wing before squaring the ball across the penalty area to Christian Carter who blasted the ball into the back of the net.

Avonmore had got their confidence back and grabbed another two goals before half time to bring the game to 3-2 at the break. Sean Fleming with a neat finish on the 28th minute got the second and midfielder Ryan Kavanagh long range effort found the back of the net for the third.

Avonmore went into the second half with their tails up and did not let up getting more goals as they began to find holes in the Newtown defence. James Woolmington found the back of the net on the 42nd minute when he reacted quickest to a rebounded free kick that fell to volley the ball into the corner of the net to make it 4-2.

Sean Fleming and Lee Walker were causing huge problems for the Newtown defence as the double act grabbed a goal each to bring the game to a comfortable 6-2 scoreline. On the 51st minute Fleming found Walker in space to play a through ball for Walker to run onto and slot under the keeper, minutes later Walker found Fleming in a similar position and this time turned provider and played in his team mate who found the back of the net.

Despite the score line Newtown kept fighting and grabbed a goal back on the 62nd minute as keeper Michael Byrne picked out Bobby Dowling from long range, Dowling then made a great run into the box before sliding the ball under Avonmore keeper Noel Heffernan.

Unfortunately for the home side it would only be a consolation goal as Sean Fleming wrapped up his hattrick with a tidy finish in the last minute of the game.

Credit to the home side who started the game in brilliant fashion as they went two goals ahead but Avonmore were just too strong going forward, an incredible 10-goal thriller at the Community Grounds in Newtown with the away side Avonmore coming out on top with a 7-3 victory.
