WICKLOW ROVERS

The senior men’s scheduled home game fixed for Friday night was called off, so it was left to our under-18s to provide the action in the senior grade.

They came up against a very useful outfit in the shape of Finglas United at Whitegates. It was the away side who came out on top winning 4-1.

Stuart Cox fired home from the penalty spot to level matters after the Dublin side took an early lead but that’s as good as it got with Finglas firing home three unanswered goals to put Rovers to the sword.

Saturday’s junior action saw our 12As play out a scoreless draw away to Drogheda Boys. The lads created several good chances on the day but found the home goalkeeper in inspired form. The result keeps the lads firmly in the title race.

Our 13As are another team in the title mix and they did their hopes the power of good with an excellent 6-1 away win over Ballyoulster United. Louis Malcolmson led the way with a superb hat-trick, he’s brother Oscar weighed in with a brace with Sam Christie completing the six-goal haul in a very impressive team display.

Our under-16s went down to a 5-2 defeat to local neighbours Wicklow Town at Finlay Park. In a well contested game the lads gave it their all, Ben Algera and Paul Marah hit the back of the net for Rovers.

Sunday’s action saw the 14Bs suffer a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Coolboy Rangers, there was plenty of chances in this game with the away side proving more clinical in front of goal. Alexander Gallet scored the Rovers goal.

Wicklow Rovers AFC promote soccer for schoolboys/girls, youths and senior men and ladies in the community, our club is growing all the time and any assistance with the help of running the club would be very much appreciated.

Over recent times we have been trying to set up a fundraising committee that would work in conjunction with the executive committee. This subcommittee would be responsible with the running of the fundraising and the suggesting of ways of fundraising for the club.

This is a very important part of the progression of the club for the future. We are inviting any person that would be interested in helping out on this subcommittee. It’s your club and if you would like it to progress why not come on board and help out.

If fundraising isn’t your thing there is plenty of other ways to help out. Don’t just assume someone else will come forward, come along and help the club progress, all help no matter how big or small would be very much appreciated. If interested you can contact any committee members, private message the club Facebook page or approach any club member, thank you.

Our Last Man Standing competition sees us move on to round five next week. At the time of going to print we had 49 players definitely through to round 5 with another 16 players hoping to join them if their selection Arsenal were successful in the Monday night game against Leicester. In round 4 the most popular choice Liverpool obliged by narrowly defeating Huddersfield to send 25 players through.

Man City’s 5-0 victory over Burnley saw 12 players progress while the 10 players who picked Everton were happy when they scored two late goals to beat Crystal Palace 2-0. Cardiff and Tottenham supplied safe passage for 1 player each after their victories over Fulham and West Ham. Sadly, we lost 16 players when their selections Bournemouth (8), Wolves (4), Chelsea (2), Fulham (1) and Newcastle (1) all failed to beat Southampton, Watford, Man Utd and Brighton respectively.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

Plenty of top action for our teams last weekend. Only our Umder-11s saw no action.

Our Academy team hosted Roundwood and they played out a series of very close games. On the day among the players who starred were Tommie Ryan, Ruby Odlum, Hubert Wyborski, Adon Thampi and Kaitlyn Mullen.

Our 8s hosted a very gallant Carnew team. On the day some excellent football was played and among the players who starred were Rory O’Gorman, Theo Messitt and Nathan Donohoe.

Our 9s travelled to Avoca to take on St. Patricks and after an exciting series of games among the players to stand out for Newtown were Jack Barlow and Leon O’Connor.

Our under-10s (kindly sponsored by Real Debt Solutions) played host to Greystones Yellow. Newtown’s goals came from Ryan Collins (2), William Valentine and Aidan Heffernan.

On the day among the players who played well were Luke Turley, Sebastian Anton and Pat Carey. Our 12s got back into the winners’ enclosure with an impressive 7-1 win at home to Sporting Greystones. Iggy Szpilka (2), Paudie Gammell, Jamie Fitzgerald, Jack Coughlan, Max Synnott and Patrick Martin accounted for the home team’s goals. On the day Jack, Hannah Martin and Kiera Farrelly starred for the team.

Unfortunately for the 14s their opening victory in the Shield was undone with a 7-3 home loss to Avonmore F.C. They had raced into a two-goal lead, but the away side got their noses in front with three quickfire goals. Ill-discipline cost us dear halfway through the first half when we had a player sent off and it was an uphill battle from there on.

Newtown’s goals came from Ryan Clarke, Charlie Sullivan and Bobby Dowling while Clarke, Michael Byrne, Laragh Davis and Martin Kelly were the pick of the Newtown players.

All fixtures, competitive and non-trophy, will finish weekend of November 17 and 18, followed by the WDSL Awards, Presentation Day in the Parkview Hotel on Sunday, November 25, (details times etc. to follow in October).

Our ever-popular Development Squad has started back and will continue every weekend from 10am until 11am and new players are welcome. The cost is €2 per head.

At the moment we have a large number of boys and girls attending each week and thankfully at the moment we have the required coaches needed but we wouldn’t say no to a few more volunteer coaches.

If you think you can give an hour or two each week, please contact our Secretary at the contact details below.

Four players from the club will celebrate their birthdays in the coming week and they are Emma Cox from the Development Squad, Kaitlyn Mullen from the Academy team, Tyler Doyle from the under-8s and JV Kelly from the under-9s. Happy birthday to all four from everyone at Newtown Juniors F.C.

Our Last Man Standing competition enters Week 4 next weekend. The Prize Pot for the competition is €550. Week 4 fixtures will be for the weekend of Saturday 27th-Monday 29th October 2018 and these fixtures will be distributed to all players on Monday, October 22.

Going into the MNF where a number of our players have selected Arsenal, we have so far lost 21 players in Week 3. As per usual all selections must be in by 9pm on the Thursday prior to the weekend’s games. Thank you everyone for your continued support.

You can keep updated with the progress of our competition and the rules on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
