ST GERARD’S DAY 2018
We celebrated the feast day of Saint Gerard Majella in our 100th Academic Year on October 17. The school community celebrated Mass where our theme was ‘Faith and Family’. The table quiz, held earlier that day, is always a fun event with many spot prizes and quirky, yet challenging, questions. The annual Sugarloaf Race was particularly enjoyable given the superb weather conditions which prevailed on the day.
JUNIOR CERT HIGH ACHIEVERS
We congratulate our Junior Certificate High Achievers in Science and Mathematics, who attained high grades in the Junior Certificate of 2018. Emily Barrett, Emilia Connolly, Róisín Farrell, Michael Gleeson, Alan Gordon, Ciaran Kavanagh, Ilana Philips and Matthew Whelehan were identified by the State Examinations Commission as being among the highest achievers in Ireland in Mathematics and Science in the country. They have been invited to participate in the National Olympiad Competitions for inclusion in the International Junior Science Olympiad in Gaborone in Botswana in December this year. We wish them every success and marvel at their remarkable achievement, well done.
ELECTIONS
Congratulations to all our new Student Council and representatives. The recently held elections were preceded by plenty of campaigning and lobbying. The council is comprised of the Head Boy, Head Girl, Deputy Heads and three representatives from each of the six-year groups. They play an important role in school life and have an input into various areas of the school.
HOSPICE COFFEE MORNING
Many thanks to all the students and staff for their wonderful work and effort in organising and supporting this special school event. Particular thanks to our fifth and sixth years who assisted in the preparation and organisation of the coffee morning. A special word of thanks to Ms O’Dwyer, for her enthusiasm in co-ordinating and organising the event. The proceeds of €2,500 from the coffee morning will be donated to the hospice.
TRANSITION YEAR NEWS
The most recent TY event in the calendar was the visit to Kairos. This is a radio communications programme where the students write, produce and present their own work. It is a full day event and highlights the students’ abilities in a wide range of areas. Our Transition Year Parent Information Evening highlighted the wealth and array of courses on offer to our TY’s to engage with during the course of the year. These range from boxing, Steer Clear, Occupational First Aid, Public Access to Law and Photography to mention a few.
