‘Waiting in the Wings’ to hit stage
ST Patrick’s Dramatic Society in Dalkey will stage Noel Coward’s ‘Waiting in the Wings’ at the Pavilion Theatre, Dun Laoghaire this November.
The highly entertaining play is about a former celebrated stage actresses living out their declining years in a less-thanlavish charity retirement home.
The amateur drama group formed in 1961 and has been staging production for over 50 years. They include members from Bray, Kilmacanaogue, Greystones and Wicklow town. The society cleaned up at the Bray One Act Festival held in January of this year, winning Best Group, Best Comedy, Best Director- Seymour Cresswell, Best supporting Actor and a Merit Award. They also left the Glenealy One Act Festival with The Molly Moore Shield for Runner Up Group and Best Actor Award.
‘Waiting in the Wings’ is set in 1960 on the outskirts of an English town many miles from London’s West End, their original ‘ home’. Now in straitened circumstances, the actresses grow older ungracefully amidst squabbles, jealousies and grandiose memories of their former stage careers. The arrival of Lot- ta Bainbridge, the once-great actress, rekindles a feud – years ago she married the ex-husband of one of the residents, May Davenport. It takes a tragedy to eventually restore peace and harmony to those waiting in ‘ The Wings’.
Waiting in the Wings will be staged nightly at 8 p.m. from Tuesday, November 20 to Friday, November 23 at the Pavilion Theatre. It is directed by Peter Beamish, with a large cast of twelve women and four men, including some of the Society’s earliest members plus others who have joined the group more recently.
