Uplands Council members on study visit to Kerry mountains

- By MYLES BUCHANAN

EIGHT members of the Wicklow Uplands Council visited the Macgillycuddy’s Reeks region of County Kerry during the week as part of the Upland Study Visit Grant Scheme.

The previous week members of the Macgillycuddy Reeks Mountain Access Forum spent two days exploring the Wicklow Uplands.

The MacGillycuddy Reeks Mountain Access Forum hosted the Wicklow visitors and organised an extensive itinerary for the council members and members of the Mourne Heritage Trust.

They received a presentation from Trisha Deane, the former Rural Recreational Officer for South Kerry, who has recently been appointed to the role of project manager of the MacGillycuddy Reeks locally led EIP Agri-Environmental Pilot Scheme.

Titled ‘A Sustainable Agricultural Plan for the Macgillycuddy Reeks’, the project is centred around the conservation and restoration of it’s upland habitats and is funded through the European Innovation Partnership for Agriculture, Productivity and Sustainability (EIP- AGRI) initiative.

The Wicklow Uplands Council’s locally led SUAS Pilot Project, which is to be officially launched in the coming weeks, is also funded through this scheme and the council is very keen to continue the sharing of knowledge and collective learning that this opportunity presents.

The study visits, which are taking place nationwide throughout October and November, are funded through the Upland Study Visit Grant Scheme 2018, an initiative funded by The Heritage Council in partnership with the Irish Uplands Forum.

Under the scheme, Wicklow Uplands Council recently hosted two study visits from upland community groups and look forward to hosting the final group in November.
