Arklow on fire in second victory in seven days

-

ARKLOW claimed their second victory in seven days over New Ross at home last weekend.

It was the turn of the Arklow forwards to demonstrate their skills this week with the pack adopting the pick-and-go successfully time and time again to make inroads into the New Ross territory.

Everywhere the opposition turned there seemed to be an Arklow player shutting moves down and winning the battle for possession.

Nowhere was this clearer than in the line out where as Theo Van Hoove dominated for the afternoon.

Indeed it was Theo that scored the first try with New Ross players literally hanging from his shoulders.

Arklow relaxed now and again another forward in the shape of second row Josh Tunney ran powerful lines through the opposition defence to give Arklow another try after 15 minutes.

These boys are fast learning that not to become complacent and the pressure continued with speedy winger Calvin Kirya adding to his season’s tally by scoring another try after 22 minutes.

Conor Gahan converted three out of three conversions for Arklow to lead 26-7 at half-time.

The second half brought more pressure on New Ross with hooker Jamie Tobin running like a winger to stun New Ross with a try 4 mins after the break.

Substitute Roy Bailham was keen to prove his worth when coming on after 45 minutes and following a masterful handoff to the opposing flanker, crashed down under the posts for Arklow, followed quickly by another consitant scorer in Oisin Beirne.

But if the day was to remembered for one thing it was the debut of Harry Stevens, with just two training sessions under his belt, Stevens was awarded a place on the team and he did not disappoint.

Cutting through the defence like another very famous no.13, Harry scored his first try of what will no doubt be many more. Conor Gahn scored a further two conversions in the second half. Arklow are rested this weekend before welcoming Tullamore next week.
