Mr Behan said that a search had been carried out on those admitted to the disco on Saturday, but the knife used had gotten through.

He said that the council had provided a lot of land to clubs and organisations to build their own premises that were being underutilised, used only one night per week.

Cllr Pat Fitzgerald said that all members of the council were committed to doing something for the youth. He said it was important to have somewhere for the youth to engage in activities in a structured way.

Town Clerk Des Nichols said that under the new development levies contribution scheme, monies are ringfenced for the provision of active open space, playgrounds and community projects.
