PENDLE WAR POETRY WIN

Congratulations to Coláiste Chraobh Abhann’s second year student Bobby Dowling, who won first prize in the under-18 Pendle War Poetry Competition which was announced this week.

This prestigious poetry competition was open to entrants from both the UK and Ireland to commemorate the centenary of the end of the Great War, which is marked every year on November 11 on Armistice Day.

Bobby’s winning poem titled ‘What’s the Point of War? questions the terrible futility of war through a moving conversation between a mother and her son. It depicts the personal heartbreak of a parent who is struggling to come to terms with why her child went off to fight and what was gained from his sacrifice.

Bobby’s poem was inspired after studying some of the Great War poets in class and then writing his own poem on the subject.

Well done to Bobby and his English teacher Ms Mongey on this fantastic achievement. The poem can be read on colaisteca. ie and all the winning entries from the various categories, including the Pendle 2018 Selected Poems Anthology can be accessed through pendlewarpoetrycompetition.blogspot.com/

ENTERPRISE PROJECTS

The TY Enterprise classes presented their mini companies on Wednesday, November 7, in the GP Area with an array of various products and businesses on display.

From personalised cups, Junior Maths board games, original framed shell paintings and locker organisation services, there was something for everyone to invest in with some nice ideas for some gifts for Christmas.

Each TY enterprise group were required to present their company in an interview with a member of the business community before promoting their product to the school. Best of luck to all the companies involved.

SPANISH EXCHANGE TRIP

A group of CCA students studying Spanish attended a five-day Spanish Cultural Exchange trip to Ies Arquiecto Rodriguez School in Madrid on October 24. Under the direction of Ms Colgan, this is the first year this Spanish Cultural Exchange between both schools was set up and will now be established as an annual event.

The CCA students enjoyed an action packed trip over the five days, including walking trips exploring the cities of Salamanca and Madrid, along with a fun family day spent with the students’ host families where the students improved their Spanish along with forging lasting friendships.

The return leg of the trip will take place in March next year with the Spanish students visiting Ireland. Thanks to Ms Colgan for organising this great initiative and to Ms Grauer, who also gave up her time to accompany the students on the trip.
