FRENCH/GERMAN BREAKFAST

The St Kilian’s MFL (modern foreign languages) department organised a wonderful French and German breakfast to celebrate September 26 which is the European Day of languages. Students had the opportunity to taste both French and German food and had previously (in class) learnt how to order food in French and German. The menus on the tables were needless to say in French and German. The students enjoyed their croissants and Wurst (sausage) while listening to French and German music. They were also treated to a slideshow of iconic images of both France and Germany. This will be repeated again next year as all the different types of food went down very well with all of the TY classes. Délicieux. Lecter. Thank you to Ms O’Hara, Ms Arogundade, Ms Garvey and Ms Kells for this inititive which adds to the already strongly multicultural calendar and ethos of St Kilian’s.

TRIP TO LOURDES

Our school was very lucky to be able to send five students from sixth year to Lourdes, with the Dublin Diocese once again this year. Mr Fitzpatrick, the sixth year, year head was happy to accompany the five students on their adventure, which lasted five days. The five wonderful students who went, were Aoife Murphy, Kerri Keane, Mayking Chong, Megan Murphy and Luke Windsor, and Aoife (our excellent Head Girl) kindly provided the following article.

We had great fun and a wonderful experience throughout the week, although it was jam-packed. We were put on ward duty in the Accueille (hospital) which we were all delighted about, as it is the duty which allows you to connect with the pilgrims the most. We got great satisfaction getting to know our pilgrims and helping them as much as possible. We even learned some basic sign language to help us communicate with the deaf pilgrims.

Our days consisted of early mornings, Mass and services and most of all getting to know all of the different pilgrims and other school groups. After morning Mass we would bring the pilgrims up to the town for tea and shopping, before meeting with them again after our supper. In our evening time we would attend prairy which was for the students in the diocese only. During this time we would reflect on our day and get to know each other. We would also often get to sing songs or recite poems of our choice. This was probably our favorite part of the day as we got to make new friends, which many of us now stay in touch with.

The highlight of our week was definitely the candle light procession through the Domain on the Sunday night, with the whole of the Dublin diocese. It was a very beautiful and peaceful experience and we all took something different from it. All of us had an indescribably amazing experience and would love to return. We are all so grateful to have had the opportunity to go to Lourdes and we hope to visit again next year.

Thank you to Mr Fitzpatrick, and to Aoife for her lovely article. I’m sure the kindness of this wonderful group of students will be rewarded during and after their Leaving Certificate year in St Kilian’s. We are very proud of them.
