BEST EVER SCORE IN TIDY TOWNS

We’re thrilled to have achieved our highest score EVER in the SuperValu Ireland Tidy Towns 2018 competition. Thank you to everyone who helped to make the village look beautiful throughout the summer, and those who do all the often invisible work throughout the year to keep the village looking its best. We look forward to building on the success of this year’s result for next year.

CLOTHES COLLECTION

A reminder that the Clothes collection bank is located at the car park at Jacobs or if you prefer, items can be dropped into to Bill Porter at Avondale Sports. We thank you for your continued support with this fundraiser, which helps Rathdrum Cancer Support, Avoca senior citizens and Wicklow Hospice.

PARNELL ATHLETIC CLUB

We recently took part in the Leinster Cross Country took place in Navan recently with Emma Byrne and Helen Winterbottom winning medals in the under-10 with Leah Barret closely following behind. Well done to Ellen Keaney on having a great race in the under-16 event.

Our next league outing is the Uneven ages on November 16 at the Bray Emmets GAA grounds. Good luck to all runners.

CLARA VALE REMEMBERS

Following 9 a.m. Mass on Sunday, the community of Clara Vale remembered all the brave men from the Valley that were lost in the Great War. Many of their relatives were in attendance. Wreaths were placed at the Commerative Stone in the church Yard. The church Bell was rung by Séamus O’Brien, at 10 a.m. to coincide with bell ringing all over Europe.

RDA AGM

A reminder that the RDA AGM will take place on Tuesday, November 20, at 8 p.m. in the Anne Devlin Annex, RDA Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend. Membership subscriptions will be taken on the night.

ARMISTICE DAY

Last Sunday saw many commemorations to the Armistice Day/End of the Great War all over the world. According to Irish Government archives, nearly 80,000 men enlisted into the British Army during the first 12 months of the war, joining 50,000 Irishmen, who were already serving in the army.

Although the exact number remains unclear it is reported that tens of thousands Irishmen died while fighting in World War one between 1914 and 1918. At least 51 of those men were from Rathdrum. These men are commemorated at the WW1 Memorial at Woodenbridge.

A ceremony will take place on Sunday, November 18, at the Woodenbridge WW1 Memorial Park at 2 p.m. Keynote speaker will be John Bruton, Former Taoiseach.

PRIDE OF PLACE AWARDS

Back in August two judges from the National Pride of Place competition visited Rathdrum. They received a presentation, that included a video with local volunteers talking about the showcases areas, along with drone footage of Rathdrum. After this they visited the Market Square statue, The Famine Graveyard, Parnell Memorial Park, playground and Gym. The judging finished in Avondale House where they were able to meet more of our volunteers. Feedback on the day was very positive.
