Principal appeals for traffic lights at St John’s Senior School

-

THE traffic situation at St John’s Senior School on the Coolgreany Road has reached a stage of such concern that the principal wrote to Arklow Municipal District seeking traffic lights to be installed outside.

The members heard at last Wednesday’s monthly meeting that Joy Loughlin brought to their attention that the number of pupils enrolled has grown to 410 from 200 in the past three years and that traffic lights are required for the safety of all.

‘She is quite right,’ said Cllr Pat Fitzgerald. ‘I propose that the engineer takes a look at this to see what can be done,’ he added.

Engineer Rob Mulhall said that bollards would possibly work and that, in his experience, people only seem to leave the appropriate distance from school gates if such restrictions are installed.

The members acknowledged the difficulty faced by schools and road users on Coolgreany Road, which is home to four schools and agreed that action must be taken to make the area safer.

Cathaoirleach Miriam Murphy requested that the project be costed by Arklow Municipal District.
