WRECKING BALL!
Under-20 Cup to be called after late great Peter Keogh
THE hugely successful Under-20 Football ‘A’ Championship comes to a conclusion this Sunday in Joule Park Aughrim when AGB and Baltinglass go head to head in the decider at noon and both teams will be playing for the Peter Keogh Cup after it was announced that the great GAA man’s name is to be associated with the new competition.
County Chairman Martin Fitzgerald informed delegates on Monday night at the County Board meeting in Ballinakill that the cup up for grabs in the competition would be named after the former Wicklow GAA President and that it is an honour to be able to name such a popular competition after the Wicklow GAA legend.
The final of the competition pits two superb young teams together as AGB and Baltinglass look to claim the last on-field success of the 2018 season.
AGB survived a late rally from Luke O’Toole’s to secure their place in the final with Cormac O’Shea and Darragh Fitzgerald key to their victory in Tinahely on Sunday.
Baltinglass put Blessington to the sword on Sunday morning with Dan Kelly and Adam McHugh shining on the day.
Referee Garreth Whelan takes charge of the ‘A’ final on Sunday.
The Under-20 ‘B’ competition has reached the semi-final stage and sees old enemies St Patrick’s and Rathnew lock horns in Dunbur Park at noon with Newcastle’s John O’Brien in charge.
At the same time in Barndarrig, the men of Naomh Eoin welcome ire Óg Greystones to do battle with Laragh’s Philip Bracken taking charge of the game in Kilmacurra.
The new competition has been a major success for the organisers, with the fact that the fixtures are finished earlier than most years being credited with the success and popularity of the under-20 championship with clubs not needing to hold players back for their adult teams.
