- GIRLS JAFC at Dunbur & Pearse’s Park

THE remaining girls Junior ‘A’ quarter-finals were played on Friday in St Pat’s Wicklow and Pearse’s Park Arklow

This was an excellent game of football in Pearse’s Park with both teams having their periods of dominance.

Coláiste Bhríde started the better but an 18th minute goal put Gaelcholáiste ahead to the delight of their large support. However, the Carnew school regained the initiative to lead at half time by 2-4 to 1-2.

After 20 minutes of the second half the lead had stretched to 3-6 to 1-4 but Gaelcholáiste found reserves of strength in the final 10 minutes to narrow the gap to four points when referee Terry Canavan blew the final whistle. It would have been even closer only a late Gaelcholaiste penalty went over the bar.

Gaelcholáiste had some very good individual players including Grainne Flynn, Aoife Connolly, Anna Dignam and Ciara Connolly but Colaiste Bhride showed the better teamwork and were well served by Karen Tompkins, Caoimhe Murphy, Tara McDonald, Emma Tompkins and Saidhbe Byrne. Loreto College Bray travelled to Wicklow to take on Dominican College. An impressive Dominican team led by 4-7 to 1-0 at half time having played with the assistance of a strong wind in the first half.

The Bray school tried hard in the second half but Dominican proved too strong and went on to a 6-16 to 2-4 win and qualify to meet Blessington CC in the semi final.

Best for Dominican on the day were Aoife Caffrey, Faye Larkin, Leah Murphy and Leanne O’Neill while Abbie McHugh, Emma Fegan and Niamh Gorman impressed for Loreto.
