Bray gardai hail ‘super grass’ success
November 1983
Members of Bray gardai have just scored a major ‘supergrass’ success.
It’s not a courtroom victory though, but a triumph involving the genuine article on the lawns of their garda station at Convent Avenue.
For the flower of the local force have just won a major prize in the National Gardens Competition organised annually by Bord Fáilte.
Their investigations into the world of horticulture paid off when competition judges decided the garden was a truly arresting experience.
They found Bray gardai guilty of having the best station garden in Leinster and as a result they have now apprehended a major prize.
The award is now being held in custody and already they have plans to detain the national title next year.
Helping the gardai with their enquiries into the shrubs, plants and flowerbeds was gardener Martin O’Toole, who station sergeant Jim Fahy praised for doing a ‘fantastic job’.
Contented as a pea in a pod with the success of his men was Superintendent Jim Hanrahan who said he was delighted with their success.
He explained that their aim had been to blend in the garden with the structure and surroundings of the turn of the century building which houses the station.
He lauded the work of the officers and particularly Mr O’Toole, and he felt the success was ‘well deserved’.
We put in extra shrubs and plants for the competition this year and we are planning to make more additions in time for the next contest,’ he said.
The Superintendent certainly didn’t hedge about their ambitions for the 1984 event, in which Bray’s green-fingered gardai were looking forward to celebrating mower success by raking in the national title!
