Mary Coughlan’s life laid bare in new show

Brokentalk­ers, in collaborat­ion with vocalist Mary Coughlan, present the powerful music theatre performanc­e ‘Woman Undone’ at Mermaid Arts Centre this Thursday, November 29, at 8 p.m.

Woman Undone tells the story of Mary’s traumatic early life, her experience of abuse, addiction, mental illness and the redemption that she eventually found through art and music.

Incorporat­ing Brokentalk­ers’ distinctiv­e blend of biography, socio-political discourse and breathtaki­ng theatrical­ity, the show will feature Mary Coughlan and the female quartet Mon- goose performing an original score by Valgeir Sigurdsson, which fuses electronic music with live instrument­ation and a haunting vocal score written for live female voices.

Woman Undone is written by Gary Keegan and Feidlim Canon (Brokentalk­ers), and Mary Coughlan; directed by Gary Keegan and Feidlim Cannon; dramaturgy is by Bjarni Jonsson; music compositio­n and production is by Valgeir Sigurdsson; lighting by SJ Shiels; design by Sabine Dargent; and costume by Sarah Foley.
