President Higgins at Mermaid performance

-

LITTLE JOHN NEE can claim an extremely distinguished fan in President of Ireland Michael D Higgins, who attended a performance recently at Mermaid Arts Centre along with his wife Sabina.

Little John Nee was taking part in Yarn Storytelling Festival in Bray, with his show ‘ The Tea Dance’

The writer and performer is based in County Galway. A prolific creator of work for theatre he was recently elected to Aosdána.

Aosdana was established by the Irish Arts Council in 1981 to honour artists whose work has made an outstanding contribution to the creative arts in Ireland.

His style of storytelling theatre with music has won him international recognition.

In ‘ Tea Dance’, Under Milk Weed met Twin Peaks with a soundtrack by Cab Calloway and the Velvet Underground, in the mythical Tullyglen.

For a long time now world weary beatniks, bomb-makers, old hippies, anarcho-punks, contrarians, outsider artists, suffragettes and fugitives have retreated to rural locations to start afresh.

Tullyglen is one such place; A remote Donegal village where Everyone has a story and no one wants to tell it; everyone has a hidden dread that someday their chickens are going to come home to roost.

Is Tullyglen based on a real village? It might be. Who wants to know?
