Greystones Tidy Towns is looking for you to join up
Greystones Tidy Towns is looking for as many people as possible to come along to their AGM to share any ideas they may have, and if they wish, get involved with the organisation.
The meeting will take place on Thursday, December 6, at Greystones Tennis Club.
‘You don’t have to be into hanging baskets, or pruning, or rummaging around unkempt corners of your community, trying to make them look better,’ said a spokeswoman. ‘ That helps of course, and all such offers will never be refused!’
She said that Tidy Towns needs something else – knowledge, expertise and guidance.
Tidy Towns volunteers have a range of projects going right now.
They include restoring St Crispin’s Cell, the small ruined medieval church near the pedestrian railway crossing at the Grove and beside the Cliff Walk path. So far, growth in the field in which the church stands has been brought under control and a proper path has been laid. A recent archaeological survey has confirmed evidence of settlement here dating back to the Bronze Age. But they need to do more.
‘We want to clear up Three Trout stream which runs from the Glen O’the Downs, through Delgany and Charlesland, past the water treatment plant beside the Woodlands estate and out into the sea by the golf driving range.
‘We are involved in making Burnaby Park opposite the Dart station a cleaned up, properly planted and well-tended place. In several places around the town, we’ve set up bug hotels made, by the Men’s Shed group, in restored overgrown corners and flowerbeds.
‘ Time and elbow grease aren’t enough,’ said the spokeswoman. ‘We want to do more, we want to do it properly and we could do with expert advice.’
People well-versed in environmental matters, with an understanding of biodiversity and its promotion or habitat surveys, those with expertise in archaeology, Edwardian and Victorian heritage, or garden design and horticulture would be very welcome.
